Hey guys. My Dad has an 80's Schwinn Sprint. It's pretty cool... but there is a problem. It's locked! I really want to get it off before it gets flipped. The lock is pretty sweet but it needs to depart from the bike. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

From the American Lock Company website.

Lost Combination

For Assistance Call 1-800-323-4568

It may be possible to obtain you combination. However, for security reasons you will not be given the combination when you call, just the instructions. If there is a key control access to the combination lock or the serial number on the back of your combination padlock starts with 0 (zero)you will have to contact the school or institution from which you purchased or obtained the lock. They may still have the combinations. We do not maintain a file of combinations for these types of combination padlocks.
If your serial # starts with a 5 or a H it may be possible to obtain the combination. Please contact the American Lock Customer Service Department for pricing and details.

Schwinny, I've got a friend who has worked for Schwinn for 40 plus years and I know that he used to have many of the combos used or the shcwinn locks. I'll try to catch up with him in the next couple of days.

I think this guy has the ticket. the serial number begins with a 5. Combo might be available.

Schwinny, I talked to my friend and he said that there's virtually thousands of combinations to these locks. Also if Schwinn ever had a list of these combinations, it would have been the real Schwinn Co. not Pacific's version. He doubts they would have bothered keeping the list of possibilities of something that old. If your going to Ann Arbor, bring it along you might get lucky enough to find someone that has the numbers or knows how to pick the lock. I know that many of the old American locks could be played with by turning the dial and tugging on the lock, sometimes you could figure out a combination by doing this.
I'm assuming you want this to be a usable lock, so that's why you want the numbers. If you just want it for display, cut the cable. Also, could a locksmith be any use to you? I'd find a local one and ask him.
I'll keep trying though.

i think calling the lock company is the best idea. also youd be surprised how many locks will open with a tap from a lockwrench. (lockwrench = hammer / tap = hit like you want it to die)

Did you ever get the lock to open? I have an identical lock that I was on a bike that we pulled out of the shed. It has a similar cord and is an identical Schwinn American Lock Company lock with the numbers 50436 on the back. Anything that was suggested above the worked? I too would like to be able to use the lock and cord again, without hacksawing through the lock (of course). Thanks.

Oops, yes, it's been off for a year now, haha. I went to ACE Hardware and told them the serial number and proved I wasn't a crook. Then they got the combination for me. No charge.
