hello. i just picked this up and was hoping someone could help with an id and build year. i haven't found a serial # yet under the housepaint. you can see the original pinstriping on the fenders, and arrows on the downtube and seattubes under the paint. it was advertised as a western flyer, but my guess is an elgin. it has a ridge down the center of the fenders. front fender is installed over the the fork crown. finned rear hub w/ sears looking sprocket. wishbones behind the bottome bracket and down the seatstays. mesinger saddle. columbia grips. thanks for any help.

It is a Elgin. Late 30's -early 40's. That is all I know. I have a frame just like it. Check the joint on top of the bottom bracket. Mine cracked around that area.

My guess is a late 30s Elgin. The 38 catalog does not show your exact model but, does show other models with that front fender. Great find. I just picked up my first Elgin with that frame style. I really like the curved seat tube.

Is it just me or do those wheels look too small for that frame?

I bet if the tires are inflated it would make a difference. Also the tires maybe middleweights instead of balloon

they need to be inflated. i think the rear is original, the front does not match. i plan to do some work on it tomorrow and then i'll know for sure.

thanks for all the help. the tires are 26 x 2.125. i didn't see a crack on the bb, but there is alot of paint on it. i did some adjustments to take it for a ride, and it's a beast. should be a fun project.
