I rebuilt an old morrow hub for my latest build, but the grease I used in the rebuild is apparently a little too greasy. What can I do to make it a little less slick so the brake grabs a little better? It has the little screw and tab that lets you squirt grease in to the hub. I wonder if there is some sort of friction modifier that I could put in there to change it up. The mechanics of the system are moving and working fine.

I guess I can strip it all down and take off all the grease, but what do i put back on it?

Well, this is what i do to all my rebuilt hubs and with the exception of the one that has worn out discs it has worked perfectly. I only grease the bearings and bearing races. On all hub internals I lather them with straight 10w30. When fully assembled and I am sure it all works properly I squirtinto the hub oil hole 2 or 3 squitrs from the oil can. Hasn't failed me yet. The very first hub I tried to rebuild i greased everything and it never worked right again.

My .02

Hope it helps.

That sounds like a pretty good plan..

I rebuilt and greased a bendix 76 hub and it works great. I wonder what the difference is...

I'm not familiar with the Morrow hub, but the ones with disc plate clutch brakes work best with oil, and the ones with 2 wedge type "shoes" with grease. Some of the old timers have different systems altogether, and I have NO idea what is best for them.

Problem solved! For now

I did some tests on how different lubricants reacted with the polylube I put in the hub. Regular oil didn't do much, spray silicone completely coated the grease and it balled up.... But wd40 broke down the grease into an oily consistancy.

I popped open the oil access hole on the hub and gave it a quick shot. Now it works perfectly. Who knew...?

We'll see how it reacts long term.
