After looking for quite some time, I finally found a Schwinn Racer in black with the hat-in-the-ring decals. The original owner broke the shifter cable, then parked it for the next 40 years. It is in pretty good shape, having some amazing patina. I love the bits or red primer that show through the black paint. Funny, I almost bought a identical frame from TheFlyingDingo, but found a complete locally. Gotta love craigslist.
I am going to use this bike as a commuter as soon as the weather clears. As far as style, I am thinking retro racer. Because... you know...it's a racer. It'll get more modern handlebars. I'll ditch the hand brakes. The only hand control will be the shifter.
The build will include a 26 x 1-3/8 Sturmey coaster wheel set, Wald lightweight "shorty" fenders and possibly a new Brooks or VO springer seat seat. I am considering a 700c coaster wheelset, if it will fit under the fenders.
I might run a Sturmey Archer Sport Shifter in the top tube, if I can find one.
