New type of transmission, seems like an update to the Dana

Impressive! it's a little heavy at 3 lbs, but not too bad. I thought it might solve my gearing dilemma on my Mongoose Beast, but it freewheels, no kick back braking (coaster brake). They also have a belt drive version in the works. I love new technology, even at 300 bucks.

They've had this thing out for about two years. It isn't exactly "new technology"; it's just planetary gears. It also isn't exactly a new spot for planetary gearing; Schlumpf has been making 2-speed cranks for ages. It is, however, a well-thought out design, even if it is pricey and not rated for off-road use.

Someone asked above about what it's do with a nexus 8. with 26" wheels and a 20t cog, you'd get a 19.2" low and a 94.5" high. Fairly even spaces between shifts, with quite a few redundant gears. Not bad, but I think I'd look at pairing this with a 3speed instead. A typical Sturmey Archer 3speed, with the same crank and 20t cog, gets a usable 27.3" thru 78" range, with zero redundant gears throughout the range.

Play around with other gearing combos at http://sheldonbrown.com/gears/ :p

$857 for a Schlumpf Innovations Gearing Systems. Bet they haven't sold very many.
I think I will take my Dana for $150 shipped.

english BB only= American BB with a "euro" adaptor. (English BB= BSA threaded BB, bot a Raleigh or chater lea one...)

As for schlumpfs, they've sold many, worldwide, over many decades. The newest ones are pricey, but they're basically the crank equivalent of a Rohloff SpeedHub. I think Dana bike transmissions are cool (and obviously cheaper), but it is in no way a competitor for a Schlumpf. Schlumpfs are lightweight yet durable performance cranks....

I really like the crank-mounted planetary concept, but imo they're all overpriced and not really my cup o' tea. I like SS, IGH, and even derailer systems more.

Man yall must have some serious expendable funds. That one is $668.

Dont forget the adapter and a new rear hub if you were running a coaster

Im sure its got its place in the bike world, overkill for what/where/how I ride.

They nailed the looks though, purdy :)

Hammerscmidt seems awesome; but it needs ISCG tabs on the BB, or a jury-rigged adaptor. Most frames need a modded BB for a Schlumpf, too. The patterson is the cheapest, and will fit most frames, but it's also the weakest one.

Schlumpf is definitely the hottest, with most options (but, most expensive.)
