maaan...do i hate it, but sometimes i have to use it.

Bubblewrap is pretty darn expensive, So newspaper could be a decent alternative. What is your guys opinions?

Oh, and i apologize to those i sent bikes to that i used newspaper in...i have yet to be able to aquire the bubble wrap.
When i use newspapers in my boxes i tend to use about 3 sunday newspapers...lol

bubble wrap is expensive. My wife bought me a bag of shredded foam for filling up the boxes and prevent rattling. For protection of the parts, I use Saran Wrap.

You know...i keep forgetting about saran wrap. When i ship i make things are padded and tight. Saran wrap would probably help this

Go to Sam's Club. they sell a Giant roll of bubble wrap for about $13. More than enough to pack two complete bikes. It comes in a big box and is usually around the office supplies.

Here's what you need to use...cardboard and zip ties.

Get an X-acto knife and slice and dice some extra cardboard up and wedge it between everything.

Use the zip ties to secure everything inside. Even poke holes in the cardboard and run zip ties through to secure it to the frame.

If there's still space in the box then stuff it with newspaper.

It's also a good idea to put an axle in between the dropouts, with a nut on both sides of each dropout to secure it, so UPS doesn't "respace" your frame, or fork.

This seems like a good idea, and zip ties are pretty cheap.

I have recieved bikes sent in carboard and newspaper. Cardboard is nicer to deal with in my opinion. It's more stout, structurally speaking. And there's less volume. I always seem to have a buttload of newspaper laying around after getting something packaged in newspaper. I've even started using smaller boxes to take up space in bigger boxes at work. It also helsp use up the smaller boxes I have lying around.

I have done that. Also make some kind of axle protector for wheels so they don't poke through the box. Need some of those plastic caps.

Use marshmallows man...
Are you kidding?
half of them would have bits taken out of them, which would cause them to stick to the frame and then the frame will arrive covered in half eaten marshmallows.

Its genious, but how many people want to make a smore out of their bike?
(besides me...it sounds delicious...like the popcorn thing)

And could you imagine using Mini-marshmallows?
the ups guy would get curious to why theres marshmallows pouring out of the bike box handle things...

now i want a smore

This might sound stupid, but.....

I use plastic grocery bags!

They are always in excess around here (five people living in my house) and I can mold/stuff them into any shape needed, and clear packing tape sticks to them well. You use a lot of them, but they seem to work very well if you're logical in how you use them and where you put them. I never pack a bike solely with plastic grocery bags, it's just not enough. I always put something a little tougher in there too; usually pillow packs (try not to- as they can pop and deflate), foam, or bubble wrap. Plastic wrap is an excellent suggestion, and does work well too. I use the grocery bags for little parts sold seperately and haven't encountered any problems... I currently have about 1 or 2 hundred grocery bags stuffed together upstairs.

I just got my bike from Dingo this week, cozy in it's well papered travel case! But seriously, better overpacked than under! ironically, one of the best packed bikes was my Thunder jet, yet they still managed to drop kick it enough to mash the chainguard. The only thing that kinda annoys me is when I open up a package, and it looks like half their garbage is in there! ~Adam

Good to hear...Been waiting for a PM...

i bet you could have a huge 5 minute fire if you just light the box and let it go....

Atleast you are using something, i had a guy throw about 20 parts in a box (literally) and tape the box shut. So of course there were holes in the box and small parts floating around the bottom of the box. Who knows what was missing.
I use paper cause it can be picked up for free! But on stuff that has original paint etc then bubble wrap in sometimes necessary.
