My wife bought a bag that is 4ft tall by 2ft around. It came from a local corrugated box wholesaler.

i bet you could have a huge 5 minute fire if you just light the box and let it go....
True, but bike boxes are too valuable for that! I always save 'em, unless they're really pathetic and falling apart. ~Adam

the LBS's around here give them away. Otherwise they just haul them to the dump.

the foam may seem overkill but if you ever had to reimburse a customer or try to fight a shipping company for a claim you would understand
with fed ex if you insure a package for $200 and they just ruin a fender or just a wheel they want to keep the whole package and give you the $200 plus the shipping cost back.
I have learned the hard way and I still get burnt

I havent shipped a bike in a long time (thanks CL) but when I did I did what hooch did, but I used old intertubes. We all have plenty of junk tubes right. I just sliced them open and covered as much of the paint on the bike and taped them shut. Works great and never had a problem.

Here's my 85 Predator all packed up and ready to head to Indiana.

I've zip tied everything together and made sure nothing can move or rub together.

that pic got me thinking, those guys must be making a ton of money selling pakaged air
Packaged air... I used to work at a Napa store, and when the local high school shop teacher would get a student that was a smart alec who thought they knew it all but didn't, he'd send them down to come buy som compression from us. Eventually we started saving those packaged air things and writing various pound measurements on them to be give to the kids he sent down... That really threw them for a loop...
