nexus 3 speed ape cable replacement

I need to replace the shift cable to accomodate some ape hangers. I purchased a long (3100mm) inner cable, and an equal length of housing. problem is, the cable end does not match at the shifter end. the existing cable-end looks like a "lollipop", the new cable end looks like a "barrel". whats up?

If you bought it a bike shop, take it back and tell them you need the other style. I have bought tandem length cables that have both ends on them. Pick the end you need and clip the other one off.
