I just got a 26" cruiser rear wheel with a Nexus 4speed SG-4C35 coaster brake hub on it. My question is, what are the Pros and & Cons on this hub.? Is it a hub worth using or should I just turn around and get a better one.? I brought it to my LBS mechanic and he stated that I should go for something better.. Any specific reason why I should go for something better.? Would you use it.?
Thanks in advance..
Here is a picture of the wheel..

I have many internally geared hubs, but no 4 speed!
Got a nexus 7 with a million miles, and a brand new nexus 3.
Do not shift under load(pedaling) and keep it lubed up.
I am very careful not to jump on the pedals when shifting, I ease into the cadence(pedalling rpm).
I have tried deralier shifted bikes and had no better longevity. That is the up keep is no worse!
The price of chains and sprockets/cogs are the deal breaker for me.

P.S. should you decide to go for something different, I would be very interested in that hub/wheel.....

I have one on one of my builds it was geared pretty high I had to go to a smaller front sprocket to make it rideable on that bike but other than that it's fine. A bird in the hand...."..

I'm with xc204,
They are geared high 2nd 3rd are close together. But they will give you thousands of miles of enjoyment.
Can be hard to find 4speed shifters but if you have one already I would use it and ride the snot out of it!

If memory serves me right, the 7 speed shifter will also work, should you need one.

The one that I don't have is the shifter and cable that attaches to the hub. This attaches on the side of the sprocket not through the center of the axle.. Like a center pin shift so to say. Is this a big deal for any kind.?
I also have a Nexus 3speed hub with the same side spricket shifter cable attachment too..
I want to thanks everyone for there helpfull comments. I greatly appreciat it..

i did alot of lookin for a shifter, could not find one as rhe hub is discontinued,i have one on my original moto glde and it works great,if you find a shifter its a good hub

These are great hubs. As others have hinted, they have a direct-drive low gear with 3 over-drive gears.... if my memory serves me, it's something like 1.0/1.25/1.5/1.85. Means you need to go smaller up front and/or smaller out back, but that's probably how come they're so reliable. It's often the high-torque situation of underdrives that fry gear hubs.

Also, like others said, these hubs have been DC'd so you can't find parts. If you only lack a shifter, you MIGHT find one, but they're pretty rare these days. Basically, if/when you need a part for a Nexus 4, you're SOL. (Take notice: Shimano has always been cheesy in terms of providing spares for their IGHs, even on current production stuff. But, once they stop making a given IGH, you can forget buying new stuff for it. All you Nexus 3, 7, & 8 ppl might want to pick up some spares now, before they're all gone.) If you can find a shifter for it, I'd say ride it til it dies, then get whatever hub you really wanted. I like Sturmeys, myself; not necessarily more reliable, but easier to service, you can buy just about every/any part for it, you have a bunch of braking options, and the 3 speed shifters from 75 years ago work on all their new 3 speeds, except that s3x fixed gear thing. So, more parts support, and less planned obsolescence.

I rode one for a few years with no troubles on a 26" cruiser, had a 36t up front, cant remember what was stock on the rear. I can tell you the shifters are hard to find. Found a couple metal thumb shifters and bought them to use instead of the plastic revo shifter. lots of return problems with the metal thumb shifters though. no propblems with the revo style. I think they did have a problem with 3/4 gears wearing out on some of them, not much difference in the feel of 4th compared to 3rd either though there is a noticable change. I think the 3 speeds were less part / less hassle so they dropped them. Nothing wrong with them though if its shifting good in all gears.

Well I guess there are Pros & Cons on the hubs.. I guess I'll just run it till it falls apart..
Does anyone have a picture of the shifter that I need to run with these hubs.? That way I can keep an eye out for it.
Defenetily a lot of info on these hubs and I do appreciat it.

I saw on Ebay about six month ago a 4 speed shifter, it went for $105.00. You could go with a friction shifter, & feel the gears, carefully. If you do get rid of it, & Mikeeebikey doesn't want it. Let me know!

Ok.. I dug out the Nexus 3speed out and again I also need a shifter for this hub too. This Hub looks to be like brand new also..

Does anyone have a picture of the shifter and cable attachment so that I can reference myself to do my search.?
Thanks..

These work
