I have not done a bike for the buildoff in a few years. I always loved the boardtrack look. My Massey Boardtracker was my favorite bike, sold it a few years back. This buildoff I will do a salt flat/boardtrack style. It started as a rusty pre WW11 Hiawatha. I picked it up at a car swap meet on Mothers Day. Everything is badly rusted. The frame is dent free and no rust through. I have been collecting parts for a long time and have some unique stuff for it.
Here it is as I got it.

Today I pulled everything off and found it to be rusty inside the bearing race areas.

Re: Salt Flat Special

Great Start! Awesome patina on it. Can't wait to see what you do with it! 8)

Welcome back!

Re: Salt Flat Special

Here is the fork I am using. It is the Monarch repro. I had some extra welding done to it. It has to have finish welding and grinding done.

The rims are rusty looking but clean up nicely. I am planning on painting them, will polish them first to see what they are like.

Nice big fat tire in cream, should fill out the frame.

For the hubs I plan on using these Sturmey Archer drum brakes with a 3 speed rear. I have 4 sets of these hubs and they work great. Nice to have the extra top gear and the low gear.

Re: Salt Flat Special

That's frame is really cool! Lots of nice parts you got there.I had to put some extra welding on my Monarch forks too, nice a strong now.Good luck with the build!

Re: Salt Flat Special

This is gonna be sweet. Love those hubs!!!

Re: Salt Flat Special

I tried polishing the rims, they looked too bad. I sanded them down and put the first coat of primer on them. Will finish the primer today. Still don't know what color I will be painting the bike. Sorry no pics yet. I may get to pulling the hubs out of the wheels they are in later after the big race about to start. I have to watch the 500.

Re: Salt Flat Special

Can't go wrong with parts like that :!:

Re: Salt Flat Special

I removed the hubs from the wheels they were in. Cleaned them up a little. Chrome is mint. The brake sides are a little rough. I will strip them and paint them.

I sanded the rims and put a few coats of grey primer on them. The rims cleaned up real nice. No bad rust on them. The tires look great on the grey.

Re: Salt Flat Special

Looks great so far. Do you plan to paint the frame or keep the patina. (I'd keep the patina)

Re: Salt Flat Special

I was planning on painting the frame. The patina is nice though. I won't touch the frame until later in June. I havn't decided on a paint for it, maybe it will stay with the patina.

Re: Salt Flat Special

I am going to paint the frame and wheels. I started to strip the paint. I don't have a lot of time for this build. Started painting the wheels today. I have to see what they look like before I post pics. I may not like the outcome.

Re: Salt Flat Special

It's been a while since I had time to work on my bike. I stripped and painted the rims in a few colors but didn't like the outcome. I decided on the old Hot Rod red rims. They turned out nice.

I also tried paint stripper on the frame but it wasn't doing a good job. Had to do it with a stripping disc and drill. Also a brass drill brush to get into the small places. I have about another hour to finish it. Hope to get back at it tomorrow.

I had the forks bead blasted and did some welding in earlier post. Today I painted them in satin black. Turned out nice. The rest of the bike will be satin black.

Last week I was in Minneapolis for the Back To The Fifties car show. Sunday I picked up another one of these bikes. It is complete and in very nice shape. A few small things need to be buttoned up to ride as is.
