Re: Salt Flat Special

This is going to be another good ride...Cant wait to see the finished outcome...keep up the great work.

Re: Salt Flat Special

Last night I laced up the rear wheel, tonight I did the front wheel. I still have to true them. The tires are not the ones I am using. These are old white ones that turned cream after sitting for a few years. These are 26 x 2.125. No tubes in them. Just needed to see what they look like.

My trusty wheel truing jig. It is heavy and old. Works great.

Re: Salt Flat Special

Beautiful bike!!! I love all pre-war frames.....the head badge is pretty sweet as well!! Good luck, I can't wait to see it finished!!

Re: Salt Flat Special

Great rims, hubs, and stand!

Re: Salt Flat Special

I worked on the fork and front wheel today. I did not test fit the wheel before I built them. The hub has a brake arm and nut and clip that the cable for the brake runs through. It will not fit in the fork. The fork rubs against the bolt and clip. The fork cannot be widened safely or without bending the forks. The fork also has to articulate for it to work. The brake arm clamp is solid on the fork. When the fork goes up and down, spring action the brake arm will come out of the clamp. I tried putting the chrome dropout on the inside and outside andstill does not work. Now I will have to look for another wheelset or hubs or fork. I gave the original fork away. I will see what I can come up with tomorrow. I might steel the wheels from the other bike I brought home last week.

Re: Salt Flat Special

those wheels look good with the cream tires stinks they wont fit but I'm sure you'll pull a rabbit out the old hat

I tried the wheel combo a few times and it will not work. I took unlaced the drum hubs and will use the coaster hub from the other bike I just bought. I worked late today on the wheels. Got the rear to a point of trueing. Will do the front tomorrow. Hope to have pics tomorrow also.

I finally had time to do the wheels. I used the hubs and double butted spokes from the other bike. They look great with the red rims and cream tires. Now that the 3 speed hubs are out I decided on a change to the bike style and name change. I don't have the rear at home right now. More to come tomorrow.

Re: "Old Skool Kool" Formerly Salt Flat Special

That's slicker than bunny snot!!!

When I changed the name to Old Skool Kool I had an idea of old school hot rod look. What is better on an old hot rod than flames. I bought these CNC cut flames a month ago intending on using them on the bike.

Today I took the frame over to a friends place to use his welder. They fit nicely and in no time I had them welded to the frame. 2 of them were not welded on as I may weld them to the headtube. For now they are bolted on the dropouts.

Got the bike home and put in a headset, fit the fork and put the 2 rear dropout flames on. This is how it worked out.

Re: "Old Skool Kool" Formerly Salt Flat Special

Okay, your build just jumped up into the insanity level!!!!!!!
Unbelievable idea!!!! Those flames are WAYYYYYY beyond coool...............

Note to self: Keep your eye out for CNC machines at the Saturday yard sales!!!!!

Those flames make this bike look like it's going fast just standing still... I tell you, I definitely wouldn't tailgate that bike!

I got the frame painted. Turned out ok.
IMG-20120726-02011.jpg

I painted the flame tips in red. It was hard to do using a spray can. It looks good from 10 feet away. No way was going to have someone else paint it with an airbrush.

The red tips are a great touch!
HUGE fan of the flames (as long as no one gets hurt on them)..
Wait, are you sure that's not blood on the points of those flames???????????
