A 1977 tall framed Schwinn Suburban I named Outcast as it looks out of place among the 12 or so cruisers in my shed. My aim was to retain its cool patina and make this rare find in Australia, lighter and faster.

As I bought it for $30.

A couple of weeks back I joined a mate on a 50 mile drive to pick up a GT Transeo mtb which had a set of 700c wheels with an 8 speed nexus hub. He only wanted the hub and was planning to lace it into a 26” 36 hole rim he already had. After checking out the bike I discovered the hub had 32 holes...

Wow, we don't see black Suburbans. I owned a few black Schwinns. 1962 Skipper, a ladies Breeze 3 speed and a 1970s Racer. None as cool as yours.

Thanks. USA built Schwinn bikes were never imported when new into Australia and this one and its partner are 2 of 3 bikes I was lucky to come across here. The owners bought them while they were living in the USA from a dealer in Virginia and exported them here when they returned. I bought the pair for $60 so Outcast would have some familiar company among my fleet of cruisers. The lady’s model is in much nicer condition although I prefer the worn patina on Outcast.
