outside of your comfort zone builds

i figured this might be an interesting thread.....

we all build or are drawn to the same type of bike that makes it into our collections, but what have you built outside of your comfort zone?
i.e. klunker guy building a womans cruiser, old school bmx guy building a modern bmx ( maybe call it IN-school bmx ),normally paint it black but you painted it lime green, someone drawn to rust fully restoring a bike , or a trailer queen collector building a rusty rat. etc, etc. etc.
just curious if we can pick out the styling cues that make it YOU but not the normal you ( make sence ? )
maybe this will inspire a new build type , who knows :wink:

Personally I don't really have anything that is out of my comfort zone since I can always find something I like about any of them.
The closest would be the first frame I built years ago. It made me think quite a bit:

and then the other would be from last summer for the build off:

It was a bit of effort to try and get something from 1984 and stuff from 2012 to mesh and not look awkward but I think it worked out others may disagree but opinions are like a*******, everyone has one.

I usually build 60's to 80's cruisers with gears and Apes. This one was out of the ordinary for me. Took a 24" Huffy mtn bike, seat and bars off a Bratz, a 26"crank and a pair of 24x2.125 tires and made this. It is 10 speeds, really fun to ride and can ride wheelies all day long! Makes me feel 13 every time I get on it! Handles very easily, fast and adult sized. Almost every one that comes by has to take it for a spin.

Makes me feel 13 every time I get on it! Handles very easily, fast and adult sized. Almost every one that comes by has to take it for a spin.

This has been outside of my comfort zone for sure. The fork was never designed for a Felt cruiser. The rear dropouts had to be widened to fit the 3 speed.

...and, oh yeah, it's not a regular single riding surface bike.

The bike I am currently building for my wife is outside my comfort zone, trying to keep the patina on the bike as much as possible and welding around brazed butted tubing is no fun, give me a modern bike to cut up or some lengths of fresh steel any day!

Something is really really appealing about this mod.
Love the Mtn Bike frame with the old school 'banana seat and riser bars'..oh, and the rugged tires too..Nice Job, Mitch

interesting thread, not sure why there's not more posts. Here's mine... I consider myself primarily a muscle bike guy, but built this one up back Aug-Sept, just because. 71-2 Sears/ Puch built 5 speed.

My build off vote, stunning in every way, they should sell this as a production model, like to see some high end old style cruisers being made with tanks and lights.

I just picked this thing up and I will not be stripping off the paint and powder coating it. But I will be using just the frame and chain guard and nothing else - not even the bolts and screws.

My plans are to use this for my klunker entry. The forks weren't made for it, the cranks weren't made for it, the brakes weren't made for it....

Well its my First build and still is since it isnt done. never had a big project. and i dont have much a clue about bicycles. so its hard trying to figuur everything out. especially as i started just building without to much thought. so now finding all the problems i could have evaded with preperations.
