Im about to start a project and getting parts together. im gona make a stretched out cruiser. I want to make it look old school....flat black and red painted rims. the question i have is that i want to have gears on it but im worried the brakes will mess the paint up on the rim. other than maybe disk brakes but im not sure i want those.

rim brakes will eat through rattle can in no time at all. the old schwinn cruiser 5's had a drum brake around 81 i believe, not the easiest thing to find though. otherwise id suggest an internal geared hub with a coaster brake, 2,3,5 and 7 speeds are pretty common, 3 speeds can usually be picked up cheap if you find a deal quicker than the next guy does.

Worksman Cycles in Ozone Park, NYC has front drum brakes that they put on their trikes; you can order an assembled front wheel set-up w/drum brake in the size you want, or you can lace it yourself, then paint it.

I agree with CCR’s advice in using an internal gear set-up, 7-speeds w/coaster brakes are relatively inexpensive and again, Worksman has them too.

Good luck in your project!

Go with the red, but leave the brake area. A polished lip could be a nice break up from the tire to the red.
