is it necessary to use a "self etching" primer when painting chromoly? if anyone has any experience could you refer a brand name? is this something i can get at any hardware store?

fast eddie outty

I believe the answer is no, just use a good primer. If you were to paint aluminium then the answer would be yes, as paint doesn't adhere to it so well.
I'll be spraying (aerosol) a steel frame soon using:
1:zinc-rich primer
2:high build primer
3:white primer
4-6:Base Coat
7-9:Top 'Flip' Coat
10-12:Clear Coat

something like that.......

what exactly is the difference between self etching primer and non self etching primer? would i be better off playing it safe and using the self etching primer on chromoly? fast eddie outty

etching primer deposits a layer of zinc phosphate on the metal surface for excellent corrosion resistance and to promote paint adhesion...smooth bare metal (and paint) are REALLY bad for the paint to stick...the etch creates a surface the paint likes!

I'd imagine that it's would be like painting any steel frame, since it's mainly steel.

Steel yes, but if it's an actual chrome frmae then there's a layer of plating that can be tough to get paint to adhere to. I just glass blasted some chrome parts at work yesterday.....and you can clearly see the chrome layer being removed from the steel.

there's the real question...is it a chrome plated frame or a chromium and molybdenum (chro-mo or chromoly) frame?

fast eddie: is the frame chrome plated?

im pretty sure theyre chromoly, but maybe im wrong. is there a way to tell the difference for sure? can i put a lil scratch on it or something?

Before you even start sanding the Most important step is
CLEAN! CLEAN CLEAN!
With Paint Prep or Laquere Thinner.Clean first then Sand, then Clean again.
If you Sand before Cleaning you can Drive The Oils,
Contaminents into the Substrate( Bike Frame )

(1) Give it "Tooth and Ancor" buy sanding the whole Bike with
oooo Steel whool.

(2) then run some Coarse Steel whool across it to scuff a Bit more.

(3) Prime it with an Acid Etch Primer.
( DO NOT PUT IT ON TO HEAVY )

The Properties and Spec's for Non-Ferous Metal Primers
and Acid Etch Primers, and Cemetatious Primers, is to apply a couple Thin coats. If you have a Mil Gauge it should be 2 Mils wet.
If you apply these types of Primers too Thick they will Fail!!!

Trust me on this one

(4) let it cure for the Recomemded Time.

(5) Do a Scratch test with your Finger nails after it's cured.

If the Frame has any Scratches coming through the Primer you,
can apply another Primer( like a High Build Sandable Primer )
The Primers now adays are getting better and Better. Some of The new one's
build VERY WELL and fill a lot of Imperfections...and sand awsome!

This will work if you follow all Specs on Primer,
and Preperation Tips above.

good Luck Bro,

peace,
