Parting Out Bikes

Sad, isn't it? Is it just me or do we see more and more people parting out awesome original bikes? Not going to rant, but it just breaks my heart sometimes.

Just like parting out a car or truck, I have done a few. The parts could save 10 to 100 different cars or what not.

Same with a bike, could save another 10 bikes.

I'm kinda like you, sad to see a good almost or complete bike parted.

I hate to do it, but I have had to part a few if I cannot find a buyer for the complete bike. With the economy in the sad shape that it is fewer people have the funds for a whole bike.

It bums me out,too.....but if someone was to post a link for a Krate being parted (preferably at fire sale prices) it'd probably cheer me up. :mrgreen:


Seriously; every bike was new once,but a lot more wouldn't be on the road if it weren't for buying and selling parts. I try to pay it forward when I can, that makes me feel better.

it sucks but you can't save them all, sometimes the "parter outer" already try to sell the whole bike and no one wanted it whole, so it's not always the on person parting it out.
Also some people buy certain bike to get a part they can't get and sell the rest as whole, it leave the next buyer looking for a parted out bike.

I found it easier to get parts this way than ebay sometimes.
Also if you have bought parts anywhere you've helped part out a bike.

And yes there are bikes that are really nice whole, then its a shame to see it parted out.

Yes it sucks, but think about it this way.. At least the bike isn't being thrown out/scrapped. It will live on as part of another bike, or maybe a few.

The way I look at it, there are plenty of bikes that warrant getting parted out. If a bike is trashed, bent, missing tons of stuff, etc then using what parts you can just makes sense. I have bought numerous bikes like that, kept what I wanted, and sold the rest. That is what keeps out hobby alive.

But like I said, when I see a goergous bike that is all original getting parted out, it is kinda sad. I am well aware that often times, more money can be made that way. I know I've sold bikes to cheap, I've even givin bikes away, but I haven't parted out a vintage piece.

It adds more value to the original bikes that are left. For example, say there are ten 1963 Schwinn Stingrays in existence that are in original condition. Someone has 3 of them and parts them out. Now the 7 left are worth more. Most classic bikes have hundreds alike, great bikes in mint condition. so a few parted out won't hurt anything..

I've come to terms with it, for the most part. Most post-war, average, or so-so condition girls bikes have ZERO value, except for parts. I mean come on, a nice set of drop centers w/ New Departure, chain guard, stem, bars, FENDERS, rack, that's REALLY good stuff I NEED.

But what's really beginning to bug me is a select group of guys buying very expensive prewar bikes on Ebay, bikes that are in nice condition, they're being bought for big money sometimes AND THEN PARTED FOR EVEN BIGGER MONEY!

i have parted out old girls bikes for years theirs just no money in them but i have tried to sell complete boys bike with tanks and springer front ends and people just wont come off the many to buy them so i have no choice but to part them out to recoup the money vested in them.... i also do a lot of swaping of parts on a bike then sell it................

The last 2 I parted were girls bikes, and one was rusted beyond making much more than what I paid for it, the other was not 100% original, and I really didn't want to pump money into it to try to make that girls bike original in the first place. I came out ahead, but not by any large margin. Anybody interested in 2 girls frames in really great condition???
