Recently located a pair of late 30's Hawthornes very complete but very weathered. I combined parts from the two to create this 2-Speed Rat Style Cruiser. All bearings overhauled, new tubes/rim strips. Been riding it all week. Definitely a head turner

Anyone have any insight on making/installing a lens in the ol' speedo?

I'm assuming you can't get the chrome bezel off
without destroying it?
If that's the case, I would cut out a disc of clear
plexiglass to fit snugly in place (friction fit if possible)
and then run a bead of gap filling super glue around the
edge and spray it with accelerator.
You should probably check to see if the superglue fogs
the plastic first, though. Maybe glass would be better.
Lexan might also be a good alternative.
Sometimes you can steal a lens off something else;
on my antique carbide bike lamp with a cracked lens,
I found a lens from a cheap clock that was an exact fit.
Clear plastic packaging might provide material for a
lens too.
