I’ve had this 1941 Schwinn DX around for about five or six years now and it’s time to do something with it. When I bought this bike it was painted a gross dark gray color, and all the chrome was painted a light gray color. I was going to rat it, then I was going to make it a little shiny and sell it but I wasn’t enthusiastic about either idea so after painting it blue it has sat for about two years.
The original Schwinn parts from this bike will live on elsewhere.

It won’t be an exact replica but my goal is to build something that even “non bike people” will recognize and appreciate.

The frame, fork legs and fenders and will be red. The tank will be a chunk of wood painted white and I’m not sure what I’ll make the saddlebags and skirt guard from. The better of the two Chinese springer forks is actually the one with the bent legs so it will be getting the legs from the other one.

Welcome to the Big Top.
Find your self round floor fan for your skirts.

All the angles work together, the wheel fits and so will the fender on the springer fork perfectly despite a slight difference in the pivot point on the legs. PVC streamers have been ordered and will be here any day. Next will be wheels, then fender fitting and modification, then paint prep. I know a guy who probably has the headlight I’m looking for and I’ll be visiting him later today.

Blasted the forks today! It was a slow but fun process. They’re ready for primer. The place I went for the light was closed because of the virus. No big deal, have one at home that I can modify to mount on a fender. Here’s a nice
picture of the real thing since I’m kind of getting bogged down in the details right now.

I’m back! Sandman came through and gave me the skirts I need for this bike! I got my bars, seat and tires too.

I picked my wheel set too, they’ll shine up nicely.

Here are the skirts mocked up on my Elgin Jalopy just for fun

The bike market has gone crazy where I live so most of my bike work time has gone towards getting stuff for sale, but I am still slowly getting there. It should be rideable soon, then I can modify the fenders, mount the skirt guards and make an oversized chain guard.

Well I’m sorry for disappearing all this time, my local college had it’s abandoned bike sale, so did a nearby city. I’ve fixed and sold probably about a dozen or so bikes since the market is still hot around here. I’ve also got a full time job with the census so that will keep me busy for the next few weeks. I will be finishing this build but not by the build off deadline. It will be ready for the Phoenix cruising season which starts in October.
Meanwhile here’s some highlights of what’s been keeping me busy.
Check out this shaft drive thing, the maintenance instructions were “put two drops of oil in the front gearbox, replenish every 5,000 miles”

My comet is basically unusable because of the hot weather and all car shows are cancelled, so I’ve been slowly cleaning and making stuff shiny.

Here’s the X1 as she sits now, my realistic goal will be to have it rideable in mid September and have it be clearly Pee Wee’s bike by Halloween.

You've got a Comet too?! What year?

It’s mostly a 61 so it has the Edsel taillights and the 170 straight six. I picked it up at an impound auction a little over a year ago. What kind of comet do you have?

Sweet! I've got a 1964 Mercury Comet 404 4-door sedan with the factory 260 V8 and 3 speed "Mercomatic" transmission. No idea how much Edsel DNA is left in it, but I love it all the same. I got mine as a high school graduation present from my late great uncle up in Columbus, Kansas back in 2012.

She's been sitting in the garage since January 2019, since she's got a bad lifter clatter. I had been saving up the money to do a full engine rebuild, but by the time I had the money saved, this pandemic had just been made official. Given that all car shows and cruise-ins are cancelled here too, and I'm not driving much at all this year, I'm instead going to put the money towards upgrading my computer, since I've been using that more than anything this year. Once this pandemic is finally over and I've got a steady job again, I'll see about getting old "Maxine the Merc" into the shop for repairs.

BTW, I love the fact that your Comet's a 4-door too! Though, I may be a little biased. Would you happen to be a member of the Comet Central forum?
