penny farthing bike

I was at our local show yesterday and one of the clowns was riding a small penny farthing bike with maybe a 28" front wheel and 12" back wheel he said he bought it a few years ago made in china
has anyone made their own? or can you buy the front wheel witht the pedals attached or make your own? it was very cool and I'd love one myself

i purchased a norco penny farthing(used) with a 28" front wheel and a little 12 on the back.

you can purchase unicycle wheels and forks (pretty sure thats what there made with)

Coker Tire used to make a 36" Pennyfarthing called the Wheelman, they still make 36" unicycles and bikes. Check on ebay, every now and then one will pop up.

If I recall, the Wheelman had a freewheeling (coasting) front wheel, and unicycles don't. But otherwise, it's like a unicycle with a rear wheel added.

I emailed Coker awhile back. They said they were going to build the penny farthings again, but didn't say when.

i believe its the guy that made that white forkless bicycle (from denmark perhaps)

The forkless bike was made by Olli (from Denmark) and the farthing was made by Galbacken from Sweden. Both are brilliant with metal and wheels.

You could make a decent smaller one from an old unicycle. Use the unicycle hub and lace it up to a 28" rim and then use the bearing carriers from the unicycle to make a new longer fork. Then you've got a curved tube and a 20" front fork and wheel would be perfect for the back. I wonder if there is a diy article in any old popular mechanics mags. This is one future project I've got planned.

I looked up some info on this a while back and any wheel that is over 36 inches is over $300. I don't know about 36 or under because i wanted a tall one :mrgreen: , but once you have the wheel the rest does not seem too hard.

I was thinking of using the hub and crank out of a Huffy Green machine and fitting it into a 28
' wheel the rest of the frame should be pretty simple

Both bikes were made by ChopperOlli and he is from Finland.

I still love both of these bikes wishin I had a lot more skill to do such work, but alas no skill no time.
