i whole heartedly agree with nogoodnic on the lowrider issue i tried differet methods to differentiate my bike from the flock, Zmags,BMX sprokets, MTB grips, laidback posts you know little stuf and i got shunned for it. next thing i see is all the things i did being applied and accepted. to heck with them

that s10 looks good from the cab and back but it looses at grill i wouldve kept the s10 look all the way though. looks like a blacst to drive

Hooch...like I said it's a personal little QUIRK I have.

KustomKemp is a great Web site!!!
I would never publically Bash anyone for using the words this
way!!!

As I stated before IN Italics...it's a personal Pet Peeve of mine.

I, in no way, am trying to label or put down anyone who
chooses to use this style as a "Play on Words"

it's all good,
peace,
Kev.

to me the "rat rod" = "do it yourself"...

there are a lot of people who shell out a ton of cash, to have someone build a "hot rod" for them. the only thing they do is open their wallet.

i think if you take a bike, whether it's a piece of junk from the dump, or a discounted cruiser from a department store, fix it up/ Kustomize it (with a capital K... for Kev  ) personalize it/ make it your own... then i would probably consider it a rat. if you pay chuck foose or boyd coddington to do it for you, then cruise around in your satin jacket, then i would say, no rat...

I've only been a member of this forum for a few months, but there seem to be about 5 categories most of the bikes around here could fit into.
Hot rod
Rat rod
Custom
Freak bike/True Rat
Original or mostly original

Hot rods are generally old bikes with glossy paint, often in non original colors. Often lots of chrome and lots of style. Copious upgrades in the performance/style department are common.

Basically a rat rod to me is a hot rod without the fancy paint and fewer or more subtle upgrades. Anything other than original (and well worn) paint, rust, primer or flat paint is out. A good rat should have a few tasteful performance/style oriented upgrades, but nothing over the top. Good things to upgrade might include wheels, tires, cranks/chainring/pedals, and seats. Period correct parts is a bonus but where performance is concerned, modern stuff is fine. Hand made stuff is really cool too. Rusty stuff is fine, no need for shiny chrome on these bikes. Basically anything goes other than fancy paint, but subtlety is good.

Newer styled bikes with some wicked modifications are customs, but not rat rods or hot rods. They may be modified to look older or be faster. They generally have nice paint.

Pure rats and freak bikes are rusty, junky, kludged together beasts that may or may not be easy or comfortable to ride. Beater bikes built with parts that dint seem to go together along with tall bikes, choppers, trikes, cargo bikes fall into this category. I haven't seen many bikes in this category here, but I think most forum members can appreciate these bikes more than your average bike enthusiast.

Original bikes are older bikes that have all or most of the original parts in various states. Parts that are not original should be period correct. These bikes should be fully functional and easy on the eyes so as not to get lumped in with the rats and freak bikes. :) Though not truly original, I would lump a restored bike in with these.

Thanks kemmer, that's what I mean. Different categories.

It seems to me that there are bikes that could fall even outside these? Something like a jalopy / junker bike? (not meant to be insulting)

Concept being a well constructed, functional and ridable bike built with the best parts from many bikes with the purpose being a good ride, extremley functional, but no consitency as far as paint, etc.

I like the look of old factory paint thrown together, maybe a few random parts primered?
