Picked this up, poor thing had been someone's garden-art. It looks like they used double-sided tape to hold flowers or something on it??? Anyway, I rescued it. It's got a really cool chain guard, but unfortunately it looks like part is missing. Any idea what it is, or what it should look like? Also, is there an easy way to date these bikes? I haven't even looked for a serial number yet.

That's a 20s-30s guard on there. Western Auto sourced bikes from almost every bike maker over the years, but I'm thinking this may be a Huffman or Cleveland Welding built bike. I'm guessing it hass 24" wheels, which can make it tougher to identify, since the smaller frames look different than the typical 26" versions. I'm thinking it may be an early postwar model, but give our other experts a chance to weigh in on it! -Adam

I saw that same chain gaurd on bike for sale in Glouster Ma It was an Elgin womans bike, I was told late 30's early 40's. It also had a skirth gaurd that was made from some sort of rope.

Someone used a chainguard like that, with it intact, on one of the build off bikes here. It might be in the gallery somewhere.

that guard has been cut down about half. i think schwinn might have ran a chainguard similar in the teens? twenties? i know elgins had them. i have one if anybody is in need. pm me.
