Pinkie - 1952 DX

My daughter has been riding The Bishop (my BB07) bike for a while now, and when I decided to sell that (well, give it away in exchange for a donation to a charity), she convinced me that she needed a new bike. She's 17, so it needed to be a little girly, but not that girly. I started with a 1952 DX frame that I found on eBay.

When I got it, the frame was painted blue, with a brush, and all of that had to go. I got it stripped down, filled in most of the dings and got it primed up. She wanted it pink and black, so that's what I did.

The front color is Mambo Pink. It's a gloss, but I will knock it down a bit when it comes time to clear it.

These are vinyl stencils for the "wing" pattern that is normal for this frame - picked them up on eBay. Much better than masking tape...

This is the final product - satin black paint, with a satin clear coat over the whole thing. This is going to be a pretty cool build - I'm really looking forward to mocking it up. There are a whole bunch of new parts on the way

I have been working on her, but have had problems posting to the forum with my iPhone, but I should have some pictures uploaded in the next day or so. I started fitting parts, got the BMX cranks installed, wheels painted and build up (still need to tension and true them), and only have a few parts left on order before she's a roller.

I've had a lot of time to think about this Klunker build, and I think I'll be building one of these for myself in the not too distant future...

Well, she is just about done, so this will be a long update.

One of the things I tried to do with this build was use as many modern components as I could get away with, while still offering up a nod to the old school. I started this with a Tange headset. Of course, we all know those will not fit in a classic Schwinn frame, so I found these little spacers and they did the trick.

I ordered up some Stolen Mob BMX cranks and a modern Redline bottom bracket. The BB fit perfectly, and I was able to space the 27T Odyssey sprocket so the chainline is nice and straight with the rear sprocket. Huge fan of this BB/Crank combo.

I got some Monark Type 2 forks for this build. I like how they look, and think they fit the build nicely. A little pink accent on them (sprayed by my daughter) helps tie them with the rest of the bike.

I had an old Felt Surf City that became The Bishop, and I repurposed those rims for Pinkie. Since they were polished aluminum, I scuffed them, then sprayed them with a 2K epoxy primer. This stuff is amazing. Seriously. I will never prime bare metal with anything else. After the primer, I hit them with the Mambo Pink krylon, then a couple coats of satin clear. I re-laced them with black spokes, using the original Felt hub up front, and a Sturmey-Archer 2-speed kickback hub in the rear. Mounted up some 2" Thick Slick tires for a low profile look. Really happy with how these turned out.

I was able to get it to the point where I could put her together and get her rolling. The pedals are some cheap plastic BMX pedals in the right color, which is the right look for this ride. The saddle will stay, but the seat post has to be swapped out with something with a bit less bend to it. I got a 14T sprocket for the rear, and it's a good match for the 27T sprocket in front, especially with the 2 speed hub.

The DMR motocross bars are perfect for a Klunker style bike, and will look good once they are painted (pink, of course) and mated to the BMX stem that is on the way.

I have a few more things on the pick list, but it's almost there.

After getting a couple more parts in, and swapping threadless adapter for a Orgin8 Quill Stem, putting on the sparkly Salsa grips, and installing one of slowriderz custom seat posts, she is good to go.

Really happy with how it turned out.

That's really nice. Of course, you had me with the Monark fork. The stencils are cool. I make my own with painter's tape on waxed paper, but nothing as intricate as the darts on this.

I can't let MY daughter see this bike either.
