When you paint bikes do you always strip the paint off of them?

Say, if I wanted to spray an old varsity or racer flat black would I be better off stripping or just roughing up the finish with sandpaper?
One more question, does 'satin finish' mean something like semi-gloss?

well..That Frame in the Picture looks pretty well striped.

~~~ Wash it with Paint Prep..or Lacquere thinner,
and it should be ready to Prime.
Some Finish coat Spray Bombs are D.T.M. ( Direct to Metal )
so they DO NOT require a Primer.
It goes( from flattest to shinyiest )
Flat
Satin
Semi-Gloss
Gloss
so Satin has less of a Shine than semi gloss...and more than Flat.
Satin is a good choice for looks and durability.
hope this helps,
Kev.
Thanks for clearing that up.
oops that's a hooch photo that got me wondering about paint prep.
Should I strip or just sand a little?
usually if it isnt too rusty I just sand them in the case of this frame I had welded it and ground off the cable guides so I fired up the wire wheel and cleaned it up(face shields are a must with wire wheels cuz the lil wires stick ya everywhere) then I wipe it with martin senour KLEANZ-EASY II
then etch primer for flat black I like krylons camo ultra flat black
this frame will get a unique treatment :) more to follw
