Sweet bike, looks great as it is, my voter's on clear coat all the way.
When I pulled it out of a field the forks were not original to the bike. After pulling them, I realized that they would have had a locking springer fork (because of the bearing cup). The ones I went with came off a 54 schwinn parts bike I had. The truss rods I will use came off a 1950 Schwinn I have.Clear coat will look good. Are those the forks it came with?
I've had this exact problem before, if you grind off what's left of the seatpost and notch it, you can make a solid seatpost out of whatever diameter of steel rod fits. Consider the old rust welded seat post as a shim.Here is the aftermath of the seat post pulling...View attachment 29074
