I made a few changes to the Red Menace I bought in 2021. A good mate laced an almost mint pair of Araya 7x rims that I salvaged from a barely used 80’s mountain bike to a nos Suzue hub and the SA 3 speed drum hub I had on the bike previously. I also fitted a Johnny True Torch Powerslide bar although I’m still hoping to get a Big Crook Bar from Paul at Genuine Bicycle Products if they become available again.

Araya reissued them a couple of years back and I bought 2 pairs on special for about USD $60 a pair. They are made in Indonesia and pinned rather than welded like the originals. The reissues are also slightly heavier and can be easily distinguished from the originals as they don’t have Japan stamped into the rim. They’re pretty decent for the price. I have a pair on Lazarus laced to a high flange Japanese made Schwinn hub that I salvaged from Outkast’s original front wheel and a cb110e coaster.

Reissue 7X above without Japan stamping.

Originals have a welded joint.

Schwinn Japan front hub now on Lazarus. Cleaned up nice and spins for days.
