So this is technically my second vintage bike but it the first one I have actually ridden. After getting the girls roadmaster and dismantling it immediately for restore, I had to find myself a bike, The more I read and looked around I knew I had to find myself one of these. So I have pieced this together from two different bikes the first being a Mercury that donated the frame, fenders and rack. The second that donated the bars stem and truss forks. Well i guess really 3 bikes because there is now a JC higgins without wheels and a crank set.(It was grabbed out of the scrap metal pile at work). I had to ride without a seat today because Im waiting for the mailman to deliver my seat post from Slowriderz, but it was definitely worth it.

Re: Prewar Mercury/Elgin

Very kool. If u wanna see one hot rodded check out my build called back in rat

I have been watching back in rat closely, I also have a 40/41 I am working on. I found out that this one is a Mercury not Elgin, even though the only real difference was the headbadge. I also recently picked up the proper tank for the Merc and a fork that is the og color. Now they just need the matching patina, and I plan to ride it until it gets bad enough to justify a resto. I will post up the new pics of it when I get the tank and fork on it.

Thanks Kreep I will keep you in mind next time I need something. :D

A Little update

Well I figured I would shoot a couple of pictures tonight after I mounted the new seat, bars, stem, tank and headlight. I pulled the bags off so they wouldn't get wind beaten in the truck, but they will be going back on. The seat I had on is getting recovered but it still needs to be ridden.

I'm building up a bike very similar to your mercury but I'm still searching for the tank. If you happen to run into another tank like that let me know. Have you decided how you are going to paint it?

Gor mow Im just going to ride it as is. I also have a 40/41 Elgin with the curved seat tube that Im trying to hold off for the annual build off. The tanks although they look the same are not interchangeable so when you are looking make sure you get the one for your frame. There was a complete Bike with a tank on ebay in Ill. that did not sell. It was 40/41 and about a month ago there was a tank on the the cabe for sale but Im not sure which frame it fit.

that is absolutely perfect!
i would so ride the heck outta that one!
nice build dude! 8)

Thanks for the feedback. I missed the tank on the Cabe by a day, but I didn't see the one on ebay. My bike has the straight seat tube.
