Newer "Schwinn" Panther as received. Girlfriend's brother gave it to me after scoring it at an auction.

Lots of cleaning, sanding and three cans of Dollar Store flat black. Added an old plastic bmx seat I had found in the trash. So comfy I might take it back. Total cost? About $10.

The girlfriend gave me a Brooks B17 for my birthday. I didn't hint or leave the Brooks catalog laying around or anything of the sort. I honestly think Angie is a psychic. She is definitely a keeper. Picked up the Nitto drag bars and generic post at a bike swap meet, which bring the total up to a whopping $25. OK, just over $100 if you count the seat, which I don't, cuz it was totally free.

Next on the list is a full fender, rear only. Might have found an inexpensive aluminum model with a bare finish! Not sure if it will fit with the 2.125" tires.

I would like a front basket, but something a bit different than the normal Wall style. Maybe an old porteur rack? This is to be a functional ride, so it has to be able to haul groceries and beer. Additionally, a tank might be nice. I know a few guys around hear are running them, but a bare metal tank would look great with the bare metal fender. Just thinkin'.

Thanks for stoppin' by. I'll post updates as they happen.

looin good i would have to lower the seat but you know me i am not the most efficiant rider on the trail. nice work

Re: Progress so far...

Given the weather, I haven't really had a chance to ride with the new seat and post. Seems like comfy hight, riding around in the basement. It might come down a bit, but not very far. I'm a big guy, whaddya want? :)

I'm going for a different basket. It is in much worse shape than the first picture would indicate.

Hey, Randy? Do you remember if this bike takes 1/2" pedals? I know some of the newer ashtabula cranks are 9/16".

Nice touch leaving the Schwinn sticker exposed on the chain guard.

I'm pretty sure it's 1/2.

Finally a hobby even I can afford. This bike is really starting to come together. I lucked out and found an old Monark with a bent fork tube. I love student moving day.

As usual, I didn't take any pics of the donor bike. A couple of cups of coffe later, it was a pile of parts. You know how that goes.

Funny thing, it was covered in 1/4" of axle grease. Literally everywhere. Even the tires. I managed to score some rusty fenders and Wall rat trap rack in the deal. I have the frame, handlebars, and a Bendix rear hub for future projects.

I bobbed the rear fender by a foot or so and cleaned up the rack a bit. Some wrench turning and cussing later:

Side shot. Yes, I know the seat is too high.

Careful flares by Vice-Grip. I may clean up later.

The rear fender has a hole perfectly located for a bullet or baby bee light. So and that to the short list, along with some rat trap or big diamond pedals.
