Started the tear down process this evening in hopes that I can bring new life to this 78 Scrambler 36/36.

Everything has just enough grunge and oxidation on it to make it a fun detail job.

Here's what I started with...

After the dissection.

Re: PROJECT SCRAMBLER 36/36

Ok that is way too neat....spill some oil or something....Look like the rest of us.

Re: PROJECT SCRAMBLER 36/36

You mean that nobody else wears these when they work on their bikes????

Re: PROJECT SCRAMBLER 36/36

Hey Monk, 2 of the adjustable wrenches are hanging the wrong way.

Re: PROJECT SCRAMBLER 36/36

That's an interesting question.

I did notice the extra holes that looked as though other rings could be mounted to this one.

Re: PROJECT SCRAMBLER 36/36

yes they are. i do believe when they pulled out the scrambler idea, they saw the cute little mag sprocket on the varsitys, and said, that'll do! :D

Re: PROJECT SCRAMBLER 36/36

exactly. so if you ever had a scrambler minus the BB, you know where to go. schwinn cruiser crank and varsity mini mag sprocket.

Re: PROJECT SCRAMBLER 36/36

Thanks to Jim (spistols) these showed up in the mail today.

Re: PROJECT SCRAMBLER 36/36

Got a chance to wash and wax the frame and now it's time to start putting it back together.

I need to figure out how to get the old "SCHWINN" water slide decal remnants off this thing.

If anyone has any suggestions that won't mess up the paint just let me know.

Re: PROJECT SCRAMBLER 36/36

Yeah, but you know that when I want these goofy things to actually come off they are on there like rock....ha ha!

May have to take a trip by the car wash though.

Thanks!

Re: PROJECT SCRAMBLER 36/36

Soak a rag in WD-40,
wrap around the area
then saran wrap over and sit over night.

You can also try some heat. Wife's hairdryer or heat gun (lightly).

Re: PROJECT SCRAMBLER 36/36

fine steel wool and polishing compound? that seems to remove decals well on my bikes. :x

Re: PROJECT SCRAMBLER 36/36

Since those are water drops and not vinyle decals, maybe goopoff. It wont hurt the paint and should take them right off.I'll let you try it first on your bike,,,,,,,tell me how it works!!!HAHA!!!!

Re: PROJECT SCRAMBLER 36/36

The funny part is that time has sort of petrified these SCHWINN decals so that they almost seem like vinyl at this point.

They have a raised surface to them and when you try to scratch them off with your fingernail they don't budge.

I'm trying the WD-40 soaking technique for now....followed by some more rubbing compound.

Will report the results soon! :D

Had a rare moment of free time this afternoon so I decided to finish this detail job up.

Ended up cleaning the old decals off and applying the NOS set that I got from spistols.

Overall I'm pretty please with the way it came out. These photos are somewhat forgiving.

A quick reminder shot of how it looked when I got it...
