Protect a rusty bike

I heard you can use boiled linseed oil to keep rusty frames from rusting further.
Is this true? How do you do it? The biggest question... does it last? And any other ideas to retard rust, that is cheap to do.

Just rub it in, and wipe it out, repeat when needed after time.
Letting it dry in the sun also helps.
Linseed oil basically creates a varnish like used on old oilpaintings, so i suppose it does last.. Century,s..

If you cut the first coat or two with turpentine or paint thinner it seems to soak in better and dry a bit quicker.
I figure the more it penetrates into the places you can’t see, the better the final result on the surface will be.

Depends if you want to neutralize rust first. CLR and a scotchbrite work great for that.

I use danish oil, blend of oils similar to linseed, dries faster and I already have it on the shelf.
