Ive got a 30's elgin and i dont want to bite the bullet and buy a tank... even a repop one. Ive never done any sort of metal work but if i find time that might be the solution.

My question is what else? Has anyone on here ever used wood? Id think a lightweight wood would give the same effect with the right paint.

I've done one and I used "Great Stuff" spray insulation in a can and Bondo. Looked pretty good actually and it's easy to shape with a hobby knife, then I put the Bondo over it to seal it and smooth it out for paint, epoxy would work too. Also since it's not solid Bondo like some of the low riders do it's not nearly as heavy.

In the model railroad hobby an easy way to make quick & easy mountains is to glue (use correct adhesive) layers of the building foam insulation (the blue kind) together and then shape it. One company makes a hot wire tool that goes through it like butter, others use the old style cheese graters to shape it after rough cutting with any kind of saw. I'm glad this got brought because I never thought of some of these easy ways to simulate a tank. Thanks. Robert

the spray foam crossed my mind. im glad that worked.

At work yesterday a guy said he had a NOS schwinn motobike tank and i talked him into bringing it by. event though its not the right size for my elgin, I WANT IT!
