Ok fellow custom builders. I am putting out a request to you, mainly the folks in the northeast US, but I will leave it open to anyone who cares to participate and can make the proper arrangements.

Who would be interested in participating in an art gallery show featuring "The Art of the Bicycle" ?

This show would require the following:

1) The show runs for approximately 5 weeks, and the bike needs to remain in the gallery for that time.

2) The bike needs to be delivered to the show either complete, or with complete instructions on setting up anything (i.e. reassembly) if you can't arrange to display it at the beginning of the show.

3) You will need to also arrange pickup after the show on one of the designated dates that we can meet for pickup (likely to be mid-week sometime)

4) The date of the show is not confirmed, and won't be definite until January. If we can get together 15 to 25 custom bikes, the show can happen during the upcoming 2010 season.

5) The show will be held indoors in an art gallery in New London, CT.

6) Any type of bike would be allowed, and it should be a finished and documented work. That doesn't mean it needs a name or that it must be a certain brand, but just a list provided by the builder of the work that went into the bike- like a synopsis of your build threads here. The bike must stand on its own securely. No chance of falling over onto someone elses art or hurting someone or itself. An accessory block or stand must be provided with the bike if needed to properly stand it up.

7) Nothing internal combustion powered- fuel and oil can't be stored inside the gallery.

8) Limit of 1 bike per builder to get as many possible participants. You are encouraged to submit multiple bikes for consideration but we may pick and choose one or more based on the gallery committee's interests.

9) Bikes can be and are encouraged to be listed for sale. This is a commercial gallery. The commission rate is 30% as with all art sales. (In other words, if your $1000 bike sells, the gallery gets $300 of that sale). If you list a bike for sale, factor that into the price of your creation.

10) The more custom the creation, the better. Some resto/custom bikes may end up being considered- we will see what comes in for entries.

This show is NOT a sure thing yet. This is a "call to artists". If we get sufficient participation, commitment and interest, the art gallery will be able to see where we fit in a rapidly filling up schedule. However there's always great interest in themed shows like this that involve, essentially, sculpture.

Sound cool? Post here to let me know if you would be interested in being part of the show. The gallery does the mailings and promo work, and the opening night shows are a good time (wine, cheese, rowdy people, etc).

Email me with questions about how it would work and I will try my best to answer. [email protected]

I'm in...working on a bike with a tiki bar sidecar... 8)
Is this the same show that was in Philly last June?

This would be a new show. I'd say at a minimum, I'll need 10 committed entries. This would run in conjunction with other art in the gallery, i.e. paintings or photography on different gallery walls.

The bikes would be like sculpture filling the room. It is a professionally run, established gallery that does sell art and support local artists. The bikes would be treated as any other art that is shown here- they would not be ridden and climbed on. Theoretically, there's a "do not touch" rule for most items on display, but the reality is some people do touch things and it's not a problem- there is a gallery manager to ensure that people don't fiddle with things unreasonably.

I will go forward with the idea and see what we might get for a show date. Keep in mind it'll run from 4 to 6 weeks depending on the gallery schedule.

You can call me or email me to participate: [email protected] or (860) 912 6882.

So far it looks like I have commitments from:

Skip
Ian
Joe
Walker
Joeymac
Doug
Bigcam59 (sorry don't know your name)
Justin
Cody
Me :)

So we're really close. I will continue working with the gallery for a date and when it's firm I will let you all know what the exact dates and times will be. A lot of that depends on where there are gaps in the calendar to fill since some shows must exhibit on certain dates or times of the year and others are more flexible.

Thanks guys,
--Rob

This sounds like a neat deal. This year was our 5th "Art of the Bicycle" show where we display bicycles and bicycle related art in a gallery. Ours is for one night only though but over a thousand people pass through in that one night. It would be nice to have them on display for weeks.

Are you doing bicycle related art (photos, paintings etc...) too or just the bikes themselves?

Hi Locojoe-

Sounds like you guys have some great bike related fun out there. That would be a great show too. The gallery where this will be hosted also holds an annual anything-goes art show, now going on 30 years(!) where the rules are: 1 piece per artist, no judge no jury no censorship.

I was not planning any "conventional" wall-hanging type of art other than a poster for the show. I haven't got much of anything that could be displayed with it- a couple of old signs and that's about it.

Now, if anyone wanted to create a sign, poster, logo, whatever for this show, that would be AWESOME!

That Graylock is nothing but trouble. :)

I would be very happy to include your creation(s) in the show.

I heard back from the gallery manager today, and the show is being reviewed by the gallery selection committee and we will know soon! I'm excited!

Bankerrat, yes, you would be welcome to enter the show of course.

Anyone who already knows what they will enter, I will need a good photograph of the bike, and your build sheet and bio. I will put up samples of what I need. Some information is optional and sometimes people exhibit under a different name, which is fine but I'd need real info as well for the submission to the gallery.

If the gallery does decide we can do the show, I will have to submit an official portfolio to them and then they will get back to me with the dates. It could be any time in the next 6 to 8 months, it all depends on how the year looks for the gallery.

Thanks a lot guys for all your interest.

How about the Grunge Rudge? Maybe we can get old Graylock to show it. I hear he's a fair guy.

Call For Art Show Bicycles

Alright, guys I have gotten positive feedback from the gallery to submit our show for scheduling.

Now I need your help.

I need a one-page writeup on each bike you want to include in the show.
----------------------------------------
This generally requires the following:

1) Make model year of bicycle or major frame components. (if it's a new custom frame, describe "2009 fabricated by _____" or some such info.)

2) description of modifications and paint work

3) drivetrain configuration and modifications (hubs, shifters, tires, etc)

4) name of bicycle if it's a named project. Places it's been exhibited (as shown on Rat Rod Bikes, etc)

5) price, if it's for sale (remember a gallery takes 30% commission) or marked NFS

-----------------------------

I need a short writeup on yourself. Age, location, your real name or
"pen name" that you work under, and what you do for a living. Any
information about what influences you to build bicycles or do these
kind of custom projects or what inspires you, include it here.

------------------------------

Separately, I need actual contact information for the builder, name,
address, phone #. This will be confidential.

------------------------------
I will clean up the submitted info so each entry looks consistent with
the show graphics- this is down the road a bit. I need to have 10
committed bicycles for the show to go forward. At this point I have 5.
I do not have a firm date yet for the show, so that's why we're submitting
a formal application to the gallery with this info. I think we could get
as many as 20 bicycles into the show if we wanted- there's plenty of space.

You can send everything to me at [email protected] or call me
at (860) 912 6882. If you want to mail me something, call or email for the
address. Any questions about what I need for the formal application, just
call or email.

Thanks guys, looking forward to this!

I did a write up on 'Sir Loin of Beef' and will send it soon. I can do 'King Daddio' also if it's okay to bring 2 bikes. Let me know.

2 bikes will be fine Doug. I'd rather have them available to select from.

Thanks,

I sent something to you via schwinn mail yesterday. It was sent compressed as an attachment. If you can't open it I'll resend it opened. Most likely left something out besides not listing a price.
