Ok fellow custom builders. I am putting out a request to you, mainly the folks in the northeast US, but I will leave it open to anyone who cares to participate and can make the proper arrangements.
Who would be interested in participating in an art gallery show featuring "The Art of the Bicycle" ?
This show would require the following:
1) The show runs for approximately 5 weeks, and the bike needs to remain in the gallery for that time.
2) The bike needs to be delivered to the show either complete, or with complete instructions on setting up anything (i.e. reassembly) if you can't arrange to display it at the beginning of the show.
3) You will need to also arrange pickup after the show on one of the designated dates that we can meet for pickup (likely to be mid-week sometime)
4) The date of the show is not confirmed, and won't be definite until January. If we can get together 15 to 25 custom bikes, the show can happen during the upcoming 2010 season.
5) The show will be held indoors in an art gallery in New London, CT.
6) Any type of bike would be allowed, and it should be a finished and documented work. That doesn't mean it needs a name or that it must be a certain brand, but just a list provided by the builder of the work that went into the bike- like a synopsis of your build threads here. The bike must stand on its own securely. No chance of falling over onto someone elses art or hurting someone or itself. An accessory block or stand must be provided with the bike if needed to properly stand it up.
7) Nothing internal combustion powered- fuel and oil can't be stored inside the gallery.
8) Limit of 1 bike per builder to get as many possible participants. You are encouraged to submit multiple bikes for consideration but we may pick and choose one or more based on the gallery committee's interests.
9) Bikes can be and are encouraged to be listed for sale. This is a commercial gallery. The commission rate is 30% as with all art sales. (In other words, if your $1000 bike sells, the gallery gets $300 of that sale). If you list a bike for sale, factor that into the price of your creation.
10) The more custom the creation, the better. Some resto/custom bikes may end up being considered- we will see what comes in for entries.
This show is NOT a sure thing yet. This is a "call to artists". If we get sufficient participation, commitment and interest, the art gallery will be able to see where we fit in a rapidly filling up schedule. However there's always great interest in themed shows like this that involve, essentially, sculpture.
Sound cool? Post here to let me know if you would be interested in being part of the show. The gallery does the mailings and promo work, and the opening night shows are a good time (wine, cheese, rowdy people, etc).
Email me with questions about how it would work and I will try my best to answer. [email protected]
