Rat Trap

A buddy of mine picked up this bike and I was wondering if anyone could identify what it is. It has a crazy looking springer front end on it, kind of looks like a big rat trap. There is no name plate on the front or any other markings on it. He said there was a serial number on the rear dropout. This is a unique frame and I have never seen one quite like this.

Any help would be appreciated.

Mid 60's spaceliner and the fork is called a "rat trap springer".
Very sought after frame in these parts!

That's one of the variations of a Sears Spaceliner. They were sold in a few trim levels, by a few related brands. They are relatively sought after, especially with the springer and good chrome, but if you look around here, you'll see quite a few of them.

They were sold under several brands- JCHiggins and Sears(both from Sears), Western Flyer, and others. Post up the serial number and any other stamps on the frame and someone here can give you the year and manufacturer.

of course the pedals are wrong(80s or 90s) the sprocket is mid-70s AMF.
