This is what I've figured out. Any tips appreciated. Hope this helps someone give it a try. A proper upholstery stapler makes all the difference. A staple gun just doesn't have the power and can't reach where you need it.
 
I make a mold out of a box or pan, fill it with drywall plaster and put the seat in it to make a form. I cover the seat with plastic wrap. You don’t have to wait for the plaster to get all the way hard, it comes out easily if it just set. I cram all the new padding and vinyl in there and do what’s in the above video.
