Hey guys and gals, I just wanted to let everyone know about a great non profit organization that I volunteered at today. It's call Recycle Bikes for Kids. Local folks donate bikes, including Walmart, and guys like us go there and donate about three or four hours of our time helping fix the bikes up, things like adjusting breaks, to just airing up tires. Then the bikes are donated to local churches, or people can simply come by and pick one out out for their kiddo.

If your like me and donate your time your allowed to pick out yourself a bike. There are tons of vintage bikes and I scored a great '74 Fuji for myself and a very nice Schwinn Fair Lady for the daughter. He had a lot of 60's and 70s's Schwinn Varsities and what not.

If anyone local could come out and let a hand we would greatly appreciate it and as said before, you get to walk away with a cool bike of your choice.

Here's a facebook link-

Man that is awsome! Me and yoothgeye do the same thing here in Roanoke Rapids NC. We have only been doing it for a little while but it feels good to help kids that are not able to get a bike any other way. I really enjoy riding and remember how much fun it was as a kid. We enjoy seeing them happy. Good look with it man if you need any thing let me know.

Was just given another bike a few minutes ago, need a good way to find kids that need these bikes, around where we live people *will* take advantage, so I am choosing to be picky. Word of mouth mostly, but we really need to get an inventory written up so we can show the list around church.

Ours get donated through churches. I also love all of the vontage stuff that comes through...

We are a church, haha. There are kids here that need bikes, the adults are just slow to come through with requests.

I "work" ever Wed. night either fixing bikes or helping others at Boise Bike Project. BBP does much the same of giving any kid a bike plus "Earn-a-bike" and many other programs. They are also out to create a diverse bike culture in Boise.

Our biggest obstacle is the lack of any kind of bike culture around here. We keep building customs and odd bikes hoping to get more kids excited about riding again. Have even toyed with the idea of bringing back a good old fashioned bike rodeo.

Can you sell the adult bikes at low cost? Wallyworld MTB and old 90's MTB get sold at $40-80 with full tune. They also sell the higher end bikes that are donated.

Bike rodeo's are pretty easy do setup. http://www.google.com/search?q=bike+rod ... =firefox-a

One key thing is to have helmets to give to kids who don't have them.

The guy thats in charge here, Ron King, has a deal with Walmart stating that they will give him their return bikes but he can not resale them. He wouldn't do that anyway.

very cool.. I have been doing this in Ohio for a while now.. my friend owns a scrap yard and donates all the 20" bikes to me... anything else I see that I want he charges $3 a bike. I fix them up and donate them through a local donation center. Last year I supplied over half the bikes she gave away at Christmas time.

it is a great feeling seeing the kids light up when you tell them, "Go pick one you like"

Dido here in the "Big" city of Waco, TX. They have a bike club, but from their website, it is mostly road and Mntn guys and and gals. Don't see to many cruiser, but in their defense, I have yet had time to go to a meeting.

I want to get something going for bikes for kids with my local Church.

I gotta do 40 hours of community service anyway...but thats another story...

Yea playstations and wii have killed the bike riding for kids now its much easier for them to do that than to ride a bike.
