Remove Schwinn fork race and crown?

I have a Collegiate that I'm going to repaint. I can't get the race off, and subsequently the chrome crown underneath. I've tried to tap a small screwdriver in there, but it doesn't seem to want to budge, and I don't want to damage the crown.

Any ideas?

I just tape over it and paint. If you do get it off, you'll just have to put it back on and take a chance of damaging it.

I got it off. Eventually the small flathead worked it loose.
