I've seen a few build off bikes with repro leather seats, they look great. Are they decent quality? I've heard that they are usually pretty hard and take a long time to break in. On the plus side they do seem to be quite cheap.

Brooks still makes leather seats, I wouldn't consider them 'repro' as they have always made them and never stopped. Same quality as always. Can't vouch for anyone else's seats.

I have several Brooks saddles and I love them. I also bought a hairpin saddle from Rideable Replica BIkes for $30.00 and I find that it is worth just that. The quality of the leather just isn't there. When it arrived the leather was dented and deformed and way too soft (either that or the frame allows for too much sag). INstead of returning it I decided that I was going to have fun with it. Here are a couple of pages from my Build Off submittal for another forum site.

I would have to agree with you, looks are about the only thing those seats have going for them!I'm pretty sure my first purchase will be my last, I was'nt too impressed either.

stepper, i love what you did with Velo Cheapo! any chance you've got pictures of the paper bag grips in progress? how are those holding up?

Thanks. Actually the bike's name is "Sissy Porteur Schwinn". The Build off was "Velo Cheapo". The grips are doing fine as of now. The bike has only been ridden a few miles so far though.

If you don't mind I will post the full write-up on the original thread in the Gallery section.
