When did they quit putting rod brakes on bikes? I picked up two new bikes today with rod brakes. One has a German look to it, 28" wheels and a 3 speed derailur setup. The headbadge says "Express" and some other words in a forign tounge. The other I didn't look at as closely. I will get some pics on my lunch break.

I got a chance to sneak out to the truck to snap a few shots. The first one may be French judging by the components, Huret(?) made in France.

The other is a D.H.S. New Sensui. It must be a nice bike since it says "High Class New Model De Luxe". It is sporting 26" wheels and a sweet drop-stand.

I think they still make them in Europe and China, Cameron! I know they have the Flying Pigeon, I picked up a pair of 28" wheels from one to use on an old Motobike frame! I'd think maybe someone in Holland would still make them, or somewhere! -Adam

The green one is indeed German, Bavarian to be more precise: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nurnberg
Judging by the English style front brake and the high quality rust on the blue one I would say China, maybe India.
Dutch rod brake bikes are, as far as I know, out of production.

Some places still haven't quit.

The Eastman India roadsters that Yellowjersey sells are new production, and they are still using rod-brakes:

If someone wants a "new" bike that is still old-school, the Eastman roadsters are definitely a strong candidate.
