I know all to well about those UK import duties charged on North American items. I have a friend that lives in the North Lincolnshire area of your fine country that I have helped with vintage two way radio equipment. A few times he was fortunate and the UK customs let the packages slip through without charge. The last time they stung him hard on a vintage American amateur radio that I acquired and shipped to him. It was made worse since it was damaged in shipment even though it was double boxed in a heavy corrugated shipping box.

Yeah and you'll get no compensation from them either I'll bet.

Compensation was the responsibility of our USPS. I found out the hard they keep you going in circles for months as they don't want to pay international claims. UK Postal Force made a few errors early on in the claims process but did rectify their mistakes. No more international shipments through the USPS for me after that experience. I'm done with them.
