I admit I have not been around for a "normal" build off, but is this normal?
An "Anything Goes" build off is announced, and then I notice things happening...

Uncle Stretch buys a new welder: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=70415
Frameteam2003 builds a frankly massive new work bench: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=70699
There are many sales of some interesting items...

I admit I myself am contemplating some extreme measures too, in that we are actually on holidays for most of the build off period, so I am looking at possibly setting up a travelling workshop trailer so I can still enter and build the bike as we travel around Australia...

Just wanted to know, anyone else going to the extreme for the build off???

Post up whatever info you are willing to reveal, about your plans and parts...

Luke.

Re: Any more extreme measures for the anything goes build off?

I've been gathering the parts for this build for almost 2 years now

But that's probably not that abnormal

Re: Any more extreme measures for the anything goes build off?

I'm still at the gathering parts phase. I have never participated but this year I plan too. I have a frame I could use. I have a design of a frame I would love to have, but with the new Ruff stuff I have some ideas.

So I plan on participating just not sure with what yet.

Re: Any more extreme measures for the anything goes build off?

You want extreme? I just got my build off frame two weeks ago, I plan on entering the traditional build off but flirting with the rules a bit, and I got every nut and bolt planned out already. Funny thing is even though I just got the frame I got all the parts gathered before I got it, and the only things I have to buy is paint, a few bolts, and a master link for the chain. I've been planning my build for a year around a frame that didn't exist... I didn't even have ANY 20 inch frame till two weeks ago. But now I got the perfect frame, a killer idea, and an itch to build something "Fast and Loud"

Any more info you'll just have to wait and see.

Re: Any more extreme measures for the anything goes build off?

Hey Luke, I build frames all the time and I am tired of grinding off welds and sanding bondo.
I figured since it was in 1988 that I bought my last welder, that it was time to buy a little better
one. I may or may not enter a bike in the buildoff. It would be fun , but usually I build when something
pops into my head . After a week or so I have to build it to see what it will turn out like. I can't use
any of the frames I have already built...think that is a little strange , but hey rules are rules. I may
throw something together and see what happens.

Re: Any more extreme measures for the anything goes build off?

I've had my build-off frame since December an my plans ae a bit over the top with paint maybe a frame mod or two mine will be Faster & Louder

5 weeks is a long time to go without "something popping in your head".I can't see that happing--you just have too many good ideas to set idle. And with a new welder.......Hummmmm :D

Don't got anything planned out. Throw stuff at it till parts stick!

Re: Anything Goes build off 08 previews?

Well my plans are setting out well, scored a good workshop style covered trailer for building the bike while on holiday. My extra special custom rims came in and I am very happy with them, already have the tires I want from the deal I did with the sale of the Muscle Bike.

Anyone want to share their plans and ideas for the Anything Goes section of the build off?

Luke.

Re: Anything Goes build off 08 previews?

Nice one frameteam2003! Now I see the need for that massive workbench! Look forward to seeing the build.

I keep changing my plans but I think I am getting close to a final set up, which is surprisingly the same as my original plan. I went full circle...

The bike I want to build is like a future retro flat track/salt racer style. Here is an early drawing.

The wheels and tires are the big drawcard though, here is the tires...

I bought custom made 20x8 steel wheel bands for them to fit on. The tires measure out at 26 inch's tall x 9.75 inch's wide when fitted and inflated.

Then I started to lay things out for a mock up and decided that with those big heavy tires and wheels I had better make it so I can stand up for more power, so I moved the cranks and seat back a bit away from the bars.
Then I tried sitting on another bike at the same angles and found I am too fat and my back is too damaged to fold myself into a pretzel to ride it.
So I decided to add ape hangers and move the seat back a bit further from the cranks, perfect fit!

But now it looked just like "FatBob" my already in progress big bike. I don't want two bikes very similar so I went back to the drawing board.

After much deliberation I did not come up with an answer, so I started thinking on FatBob's build, I have had trouble finding a better tire for the rear, so I was thinking of ways to fit some narrower (only 5inch wide) whitewall Harley tires to it, then it hit me, the new 20 inch wheels and tires are a perfect fit for the FatBob build and the whitewalls are perfect for a future/retro salt flat racer build!

So my plan at the moment is to fit my new custom 20 inch wheelset to FatBob and build the original planned build off drawing I had but with lighter and smaller wheels and tires which will allow me to fit it better...

One of the whitewall tires is behind the tire in the first tire pic. ^

Re: Anything Goes build off 08 previews?

Luke,I'll though this out---sick bike parts sells an extra long spindel for 3 piece cranks. It's to allow the pedals to clear their motors but you could use one also to move the cranks out to clear large tires and maybe not have to have a jack shaft.

Re: Anything Goes build off 08 previews?

Thanks for the tip Frameteam, I will keep that in mind for future builds.
Then again, I am never afraid to widen a standard length bb! The one on FatBob I think came out at 12 inch's long... Buying one already made and the right length would be a huge bonus though.

On this build I have an idea I want to try where the whole drive system, derailleur, gears and all is hidden until it gets to the jack shaft, so all that can been seen is the one chainring exiting the frame with a chain to the rear wheel which will have a matching chainring. Trying to keep it all smooth and aero efficient. Hoping to do the same with the brakes too.

Bring on the 1st of May!

My plan for the build off would have fit in with the old rules, but because of the fact that it does involve some welding on the frame, it will be in the anything goes category, despite being 95% traditional.

This might put me at a disadvantage, having something like a traditional rat in the same category as scratch builts, but this year I'm building a bike that I've been wanting, as I want it, with no compromise. I might be able to bolt the pieces on, and remain in the traditional builds column, but bolting on just wouldn't be me, would it?

You are right TRM! I had not seen that! The best bit is, it even works looking from the other side...
Here is a mock up I did in windows paint last night.

I am going to have trouble knowing which side to take pictures on this bike, some on the forum insist on photos taken from the drive side, on this one the drive side is opposite from the normal side, and is only a very small run of chain on two equal size sprockets...

Luke.

I'm not actually sure you will be at too much of a disadvantage Deven_science, 95% of the people on this site are not scratch builders and it would not surprise me if a similar amount far prefer a more traditional build anyway. It will be very interesting to see what happens at voting time!

Luke.

Deven_Science made a good point there, about building a bike that he likes rather than going for the votes, made me rethink my plans, came up with a new frame design, one that I could actually ride more comfortably and is more my "style," plus, might end up running the twenty's on it!
