Just finished my Rust-DX build. It started with my desire to do a faux-patina bike. When I received this badly pitted '49 DX frame I knew the time was right.
The frame, a pair of Schwinn balloon forks, the rims and chainguard went to my powder coater where I called in some barter points to try out a simulated rust powder coating.
The rims were laced up to some naturally rusted New Departure hubs that I went through and made functionable again.
Model W up front
The rusty nipples blend in well.
And a Model D in the back.
A naturally rusted Schwinn skip tooth sprocket and crank tucked into the Hawthorn chain guard
Rusty bars, stem, and head set hardware finished off the front end.
A Schwinn seat that was coppertone in another life fits in here now. It is just temporary until I find crusty leather saddle.
The seat post and clamp were soaked in muratic acid to remove the cadmium plating and the sprayed with salt water to make them match the bike.
The only shiny bit I wanted to use on the bike was this polished Schwinn head badge
This afternoon the chain showed up from jerrykr so I was able to finish the bike and take it for a ride around town
