Heres my opinion witch is only as good as the paper it's written on . You have been at list longer than I have & it shows. Your heading in the wright direction which may suck for the rest of us . At least there's No prize money involved. The truss rods were exactly what that bike needed. Your lucky that other fork was wrong . As I said before not sure about the peddles they definitely need painted . Not sure if you saw the ones I picked out but it is your ride . That's my only critique. I also like the duck tail fender. This bike is heading the right direction for sure . The hammers down & the salts flying .

Most purists only want them restored as they were originally. That's not my thing. I don't have a complete plan for this build at all right now. As usual, I'll have fun trying out different parts and ideas. Most will fail, but in the end I'll find a balance that I like. Some may feel that anything I add to the bike is "grafitti", but I feel I usually put enough thought into a build to make sure things flow well.

I like this statement....It really is all about the 'flow'.
Not really Trial and Error.no errors in bike building...just ideas that don't work out
Like.. here's an idea I have, let's try it.
Then you stand back...nahhh....just doesn't cut it..no biggie, try something else.
Good Luck with the build..Love those old pics from the 30s & 40s

That chain guard looks like a Zeppelin. What is it from?

The guard is very adjustable, so I am guessing it was aftermarket, but they were found on Manton & Smith bikes like this Golden Zephyr.

What are those handlebars called on the Golden Zephyr Kingfish?
I think I tried to google for 'swept back' bars, braced handlebars, and didn't really find any that looked like that.
I just started building a longtail cargo bike 3 days ago..and I need those bars. or knockoffs, straight back..braced.
that's what I envisioned in my head for the handlebars anyway

thanks,

Franco, I had a similar problem. They seem to most commonly be called "motobike" or "motorbicycle" or "crossbar" handlebars, but you'll still find a lot of unwanted matches. Sensor builds all kinds of custom bars for a very reasonable price and that's where I got mine for Interrobang.

The bars that I see when I google Manton Smith Golden Zephyr are mostly what you call longhorn cross bars. Basically the same bars that I am using on SaltHammer. They are swept back at an angle.
The motobike cross bars that you are thinking of still have a cross bar, but there isn't a sweep. The bars typically come straight back and the grips are parallel.
@sensor can make you anything from replica bars to insane radical bars and just about everything in between.

Picked this up at goodwill. Don't know if my idea for it will work or not

I can tell you this is NOT what's happening with it, but I put it on there for the fun of it.

Cool mockup King!

DAY 4 - Wanted to make this bike a rider today. First thing I needed to do was switch out the front wheel. Josh had these killer patina painted Schwinn S2 wheels under the Moonies. The problem with the front wheel was the fact that the wide rim pushed the center of the Moon discs out so that spacers had to be used for the fork blades to clear the discs. This didn't leave enough axle to secure the wheel to the thick SK forks. So I picked up regular skinnier allow MTB wheel from my stash and made the swap.

The aluminum wheel works better with the aluminum discs. I'm assuming that you'll be changing out the rear also.:cool2:

How was the ride? I remember when I rode it in Cleveland lat year, it had a real unique feel to it. The sprung rear triangle gives it a different feel than a normal frame.

Gots to find me some fountains!!! :) predictable!!! But still cool! :cool2:

Bike looks good, you are way ahead of me. :20:

D4 - The bike rode well. Riding position is just about perfect. Definitely should have thrown some grips on though. The old longspring was comfy. I could feel the leafspring working some but didn't get any yoyo action when pedaling. When I wiggling the handlebars back and forth the bike does feel a little wobbly, but it's still a solid ride. I couldn't have been happier with the maiden voyage. Just about everytime I stopped for photos, I had tourists taking photos of the bike too. It's pretty common for me to meet some nice people when I go on my rides amongst some of Savannah's 17 million annual visitors.
