Re: ... Schark Deluxe ...

I started with this $20 yard sale chinese Schwinn (circa early 90s) that I bought about two years ago. The only things that I kept for this build are the frame, forks, seat post, and crank. I know... I shouldn't even call this thing a Schwinn because its not Chicago made.. I get that :). The frame isn't bad for what it is and the springer works well...

Shortly thereafter I turned it into this cool little rider. Painted with a deep automotive grade water based black... I liked the black so much that I wanted more of it. So the search was on for fenders, rack, chain guard, etc..

As I searched for parts I always caught myself drawn toward Monark sheet metal. The first time I saw a Super Deluxe I couldn't stop staring at it.. I loved the deep fenders, the aluminum reflector, the tough looking chain guard, and the cheese greater ----OH MAN! the cheese grater rack is just awesome!!!
So thats it,, Monark sheet metal it is...

"npence" hooked me up with a nice deep Monark rear fender, and "dogdart" supplied the deep Monark front fender & brace. The other stuff pictured came via ebay and the VBS swap.

Re: ... Schark Deluxe ...

After building bikes for my lady - my future mother in law - and my son its my time... I've been tinkering with this one off and on in between the other projects, but I never really made it a priority. I wanted to get my family into some cool bikes first! So now I figured its time I get onto seeing my project to completion. :D I would have loved to done this one for RRBO6 but it was an already started & painted project... Anyway, these pics show where its at today. The cheese grater was an easy fit and leveled out nicely with the supports bolted to the Schwinn fender mount holes on the dropouts. We also played with an accent color. I thought that a candy root beer would look great next to the deep black, so we tried it out. I drilled out all the factory rivets from the cheese grater. After welding up some cracks near where it mounts to the seat post clamp, the rack and legs were painted black... then the grater itself was treated to a sweet candy root beer and was reassembled with stainless allen head hardware. It came out sooo nice I just gotta have more of it too!! I'm gonna have a set of drop center rims done in candy root beer as well, along with rebuilt & repainted ND blackout hubs (non skip tooth). The fenders, chain guard, and tank (as soon as I find one) will be painted black as well. I just hope the final product comes out as good as I see it in my head!!

Re: ... Schark Deluxe ...

Before the frame was painted I cut off all the extra mounting tabs because I didn't think I'd ever use them... When it came time to figure out the chain guard, I couldn't really weld on a new tab since the bike was already painted. I ended up cutting the bracket off this guard and swapped it for the bracket on the guard I used on my sons Firestone. Funny how it worked out that way. At least nothing went to waste. I couldn't switch guards.. although they're the same.. his is 24" and mine is 26". I also shortened the guard a couple inches so it would look right with the rear universal mount.

Fender mounting.

Rear:
Once again I had to deal with a non existent mounting point! Geez, I get too happy with the cut off wheel & grinder I guess... Here was my solution with a piece of angle iron.

I snatched this bracket off a repop 24" Schwinn fender I had :D

Front:
Made my own since the "AS" brackets are aparantly made of white gold

I need to trim off the excess

Re: ... Schark Deluxe ...

Thanks for the comments guys! Its really all about getting those other parts into paint now. Lots of black to be sprayed.. including the blackout hubs I mentioned earlier. I'm debating on whether or not I'll go with a satin finish on them, to make them look original.. or go with a gloss clear coat..? I'm kind of liking the idea of making them look as original as possible.. hmmm

Oh, and that head light is empty.. I still need to hack up a LED flashlight for it. Harbor Freight sells a 109 LED flashlight that I think will work nicely.. and be super bright!!

I also ordered a "Schark Deluxe" reflective vinyl decal for the chain guard today :D

Re: ... Schark Deluxe ...

Bike is looking awesome man, more so seeing how it was before.
I love the ratty look of the rear fender, If the ride were mine I´d make the front match the rear patina. But I want to see what your vision turns into.

Do you by any chance live on Mayfield Place? Cause your street looks a lot like the one in the movie The ´Burbs...

Sorry for hijacking the thread

Re: ... Schark Deluxe ...

I've been riding this guy a lot and figured its time for the fenders & guard to come off for paint. In light of the "NEW" sister web site, I thought it was a good opportunity to give it some attitude and turn it into a 26" BMX (which I've been wanting for some time now). I've been slowly collecting parts for such a transformation.

When I picked up this little girls Schwinn for parts, I knew I liked the bars but they needed to be wider...
CIMG2131r-1.jpg

They were 23" and I wanted them somewhere around 26". I had some scrap ends off a set of cruiser bars I shortened and used two 1.5" pieces for extensions and welded them on.

I had a flying heart skip tooth sprocket I wanted to put to use, so I picked up one of these rear skip tooth cogs made to fit the newer coaster hubs.

Here he his.. Wearing a set of Maxxis Holy Roller 26x2.2 tires. Still need grips and pedals. I'll put in my Porkchop order in a couple days for a set of brown Ame grips and gold ano VP bear trap pedals.

This old leather Ideale seat is super comfortable! I think its looks just right on there too.
CIMG2363.jpg

This is kinda scary... Its only in the drop out about 3/4 the width of the axle.. Need one more link, grrr :x
The skip tooth Diamond chain I ha was almost rusted solid. I bead blasted it which git rid of the rust and loosened it up some. Then I worked every link back and forth to free them up. I hit it with some gold paint along with some green and red to mimic cad plating. I thoroughly worked each link again with good quality teflon chain lube, an now its like new. Came out pretty good. Too bad I'm one link short!!

It's really cool to be able to "re-invent" the same bike again and again. I like all the versions but really like the BMX cruiser version.

I just threw the old pedals on it and took it for a spin. As much as I like the sound the skip tooth drive makes... it's just to risky to me to keep the chain short like it is. The last thing I want is to have the back wheel come out of the drop outs while at any speed.. I may have to go back to a regular chain.

I've never messed with a skip tooth chain before this one. How hard is it to add a link? Of course I'd have to find one first.

I really like the flying heart sprocket but I had to switch it out with a smaller Rollfast sprocket. Now i'm deep into the rear dropouts where I should be, and the gear ratio is much better. Didn't have to mess with the chain link either!

Also I took the bars pictured above and bead blasted the satin black rattle can paint off. They just didn't look good (to me) next to the glossy black frame. I had the bars along with the Rollfast sprocket painted with the same automotive paint & clear coat as the frame. Now they're ultra glossy black and look great!

I'll post more pics once pedals & grips arrive
