My latest project is a 1968 Schwinn Collegiate that somebody put on the curb. It didn't have brakes, handlebars or pedals when I picked it up and the front tire was shot. So far I have put on some bars and pedals I had laying around and a new front tire. I also started shining up the chrome. Plans are to keep the paint the way it is along with the mismatched tires and start cruisin! I plan to bring the seat further back and I would like to utilize a coaster brake to keep a clean look but I also want to keep the 5 speed.

This is what it looked like when I got it.

This is what I have done so far.

I have seen some light weight cruisers made into boardies and they work well. I like the pic with the closeup of the nubby gumwall tire.

I've got a Collegiate that I use to commute to work
3 days a week; I put a Brooks saddle on it and some Velo
Orange Left Bank handlebars with cork grips.
It's such a nice riding bike; really doesn't need more than
five speeds.

Be wary of old stock replacement tires in the Schwinn size,
I think some of them must shrink with age or something, because
the seem to be slightly too small for the rim and won't seat
correctly no matter what. I put some Cheng Shin tires on mine;
they seem to fit alright.

Some day I might see if 700C rims will fit, or maybe 650B, but
for now I'm enjoying spending absolutely nothing on it.
