I just got a new project. It is a 50's ? schwinn Heavy Duty with S7 rims. I could not seem to stretch some tires I had lying around off another 26" bike over the rim. I then measured and came up with a 23" as apposed to the standard 22.5 wheel. Is this not a 26" wheel set? Can anyone shed light on this for me?

Schwinn purposely made their own (unique) wheel sizes. With the exception of an S-2, which any standard 2.125 tire will fit, you must find a tire made to fit an "S" wheel. There is a wider tire made to fit a 26" S-7 wheel it is a 26"x 2 1 3/4 Tempe bicycle used to carry these. Other than that you will need a 26" x 1 3/4 Westwind re-pop or original to fit this wheel. I know 1.75 and 1 3/4 sound the same, but trust me, in this application they are not. Later & PEACE!!!!

Sheet. Thanks for the info. Not exactly what I wanted to hear. I got the wheels with the bike on a trade and thought "Great wheels!" with thoughts of a paticular style tire I wanted to use but now the air has been let out of my tire. If anyone else knows where to get a selection of this type of tire, or maybe some one has a similar wheel set to trade I might be interested in that. I like the wider rim balloon tire style 26 . Thanks!

mostly see those wheels on tandem bikes. kenda also makes a cheap s-7 tire and they arent hard to find, but you usually have to order them.

Schwinn was unique in their middleweight and lightweight wheel sizing, making it harder on us trying to restore these bikes now many years later... but it's nowhere near impossible.

Here are some cheap alternatives:

Niagara is a good company to deal with. Memory Lane Classics is another great source.

A bike shop which enjoys selling and servicing "cruiser" or "comfort" models is likely to know what you're talking about with these tires. The shops geared mostly to latest and greatest road bikes and downhill mountain bikes, they'll probably look at you funny.

If there's any question about what you need, the size is 26x1-3/4" inch, and the rim diameter in the current system is 571mm vs. the 559mm of most "standard" 26x2.125 or 26x1.75 or 26x1.90 MTB or "cruiser" models of tire.

Good luck, once you solve this problem I'm sure the project will move right along.

I would keep them and run them if I could find a pair of fat tire, ballooner, 26X2.25 or better. Know of anything like that? Thanks for the info!
