Schwinn Mercury?

Another I'm building for a friend. Can anyone tell me about this please? Is it a Schwinn or are the grips deceiving me?

The grips have mislead you... It was built by Murray of Ohio in the early 50's. There may be a letter code on the bottom of the bottom bracket to pinpoint the year.

Ok, the bike has 40856 stamped under the bottom bracket, does this mean anything?

Not a Schwinn, just Schwinn grips. A very nice bike though.

No, the date could would be a letter, isolated or following a "MO", not part of the serial # sequence. Not all Murray-built have the date code.

Thanks Doug, yeah there was no sign of a letter. It's definitely a Murray though, found it on the head badge when I cleaned it up.
