sorry to ask,

I am having Trouble Reading and De-coding.
I went to the Serial Number page and I am a Bit confused with my New Schwinn.

apparently Vette's where built last in 65.

so The Serial Number looks to be ( it looks like a straight line like an I,
but I understand I's where not used ) so I assume it's a L or a J

so,it says;
J 60546

or it says L 60546

maybe someone could help me date it.
if not I'll take a Picture Tomorrow and Post the Pic of The serial Number.
Thanks,
Kev.

I know how to check them,
it's just I'm having an Issue with the letter I

which could be a J or a L

but I see it has the 60546 so I'm thinking a Schwinn Expert may
be able to help with that one, being that it is only a 5 Digit Number

Thanks,
Kev.

From those two numbers it looks like it's either a 1953 or a 1954. Not sure if they made a Vette that early. Actually I think they started making them in 1956.

If there are not two letters at the beginning then it's a pre 1965 bike.

That checkerboard decal on the seat tube may be a sign that it's not a Corvette, but maybe a Tiger....just a guess. The Corvettes all had that cool pinstriping design on the seat tube.

Not sure if they put that on the older Vettes or not.

Looks like you'll have to post a photo of that serial number.

Thanks Rat Rod..
so it's even better that it's Older.

I have never heard of a "Tiger"
That Checkered Pattern in The Link looks like it's in The Exact
Spot my Faded out one is,
and Mine has Faded Schwinn Writing Script like that one in The Link,
on The Top Tube.

Was the Schwinn Tiger a Base Model...High End Model...Etc ???????

either way..it's a Killer Bike!!!

Yeah the bike is killer...and the older the better.

I'm seeing that decal on a 1957 American too....the color might be Opelescent Red too.

My '63 Deluxe American has the checkerboard on it also. I am also leaning toward the Tiger...Kelly

I had my next door Nebour reading it to me over The Phone..
( I was at my Girlfriends when I posted this )

and now that I'm home it Clearly says

L 60546

so,I'll dig that one up in The serial Number Catolouge.

Thanks to everyone for the Help,
This one will be a Fun Build.

Future Plans include The Use of a Sawz-all / Welders / Grinders / Pipe Benders / Non-Schwinn Color Scheem's...and I'm going to Top it
off with "Sears" Stickers.

Yup..I'm going to Turn it into a Low Budget Department Store
Style Bike of The 50's

( 1954 )
Date ---------------- Serial #`s From --------------- To
01/15 to 01/19 ------- L00001 ------------------ L04906
02/05 to 02/08 ------- L04907 ------------------ L12700
02/09 to 02/12 ------- L12701 ------------------ L17737
02/22 to 02/28 ------- L17738 ------------------ L21840

03/04 to 03/31 ------- L21841 ------------------ L33239

06/29 ------------------ L55182 ------------------ L59395

07/01 to 07/20 ------- L59396 ------------------ L62159

so I guess mine is a 1954 ( made in July )

Hmm...yeah, something is screwy here.

Bunch O Bikes has it falling under both dates...54 & 56.

Looks like it's has been discussed on the Schwinn forum too:

http://www.schwinnbike.com/heritage/sho ... ial+number

They didn't make a bike in 54 with that checkerboard decal on the seat tube...at least it wasn't in the catalog.

Looks like you may be the proud owner of a 1956 Schwinn American.

Curious if you can see any signs of where the cable clamps used to be on the top tube. Maybe the paints a bit darker there???

and Thanks a lot for the Help on my Schwinn.
I'm happy it's a 56.
