Schwinn Stingray 5 speed

Sorry for the newbie question. I am putting together the FIRST bike in my collection. It's a Schwinn 5 speed. I am having trouble with the shifter. I am getting slop in the shifter no matter what order I put the parts in. I have a thin washer, a gear indicator, a thick washer that is not completely round in the middle, and the shifter. Could someone please give me some direction. Any help would be appreciated.

Looks like your cable is too long, buddy. try taking up the slack and see if that helps

I should clarify that the slop is in the shifter rattling left and right once I have everything connected and the cover is on. I assume that I either have the parts in the wrong order or I am missing a nut.
