Can anyone tell me why some many rims of the 1949 era were painted a cream color with pinstripes on them? But most pics online have the shiny rims?

Here's my Straight-Bar BMX build. I think it's a early 50s frame, but not 100% sure, it's been re-painted at some point during its life and I can't find the serial #.

Generally speaking painted rims were on the lower model bikes with chrome reserved for the top of the line. Most catalogs and adds feature the highest end bike in the line they were offering, but most people bought a lesser model.

I've had this '52 frame & fork for a couple yrs and finally put it together last week. It was pretty crusty so I had to wash it real good, stabilize the rust with CLR, & wax it. Came out looking a lot better than it was! Wish I took a before pic.
