I have an old Schwinn Bantam with what the tires said to be 20 inch, yet I can't get a 20 inch tire to fit on it and neither can the bike shop. They said it's a special size that schwinn used to make. Anyone know any truth to this or where to find some tires for it?

Check on the rim itself. Its probably stamped s-7, which is a Schwinn specific size: 20 x 1 3/4 (NOT THE SAME AS 20 x 1.75). The easiest place to find tires for them is to search epay. There's a pretty big market for them, and they're pretty easily available. Just make sure they're s-7 compatible.

is it real narrow?
schwinn made 3 different 20" sizes that I know of
the s2 wheel takes a 20x 2.125 tire
the s7 wheel takes the 20 x 1 3/4 tire which is different than the 20 x 1.75 non schwinn
and then there is the 20 inch s5 or s6 which take the same tire and its 20 x 1 3/8

I picked up a couple of s-7 tires from Memory Lane Classics awhile back for about $25 shipped. Of course, they were aftermarket brick treads. If you don't care about authenticity though, they work well and look good.

uhhh... schwinn's specialty tire sizes. finding 26x 1 3/4" cruiser tires for my 51' spitfire before there was a craigslist of i had a computer was... fun, like getting a complimentary root cannel from the local dentist. now i have a parts 59' schwinn ladies racer 1speed bike with rims that aren't gonna quite fit a 26x 1 3/8 tire on and was woundering if i can fit a 27" tire on them or if i needed a special schwinn sized skinny tire. my luck, the tires were so dry rotted that i couldn't get a size off them or the rim, yet a 26x 1 3/8 tire fit on the front wheel. go figure.
