i have MANY bikes...is it an original seatpost or longer? from what (if original)?

The bike is a Giant "Option". I believe it is early/mid '90's vintage. It was probably marketed as a "cross" bike in its day. We're doing a flatbar road rocket treatment to it for my son.
It was given to me w/o the post, so I have no idea what length the stock one was.
I have one of thos QBP tapered shims and a 27.2 post I am going to try for now. Do you have any experience with the shim? It seems like a halfwit fix to me, but it is all I can do at the moment.

I sold my first custom frame at the Ann Arbor show with a 28 mm suspension seat post and I know when I bought it they could order it in different diameters.

i have used seatpost shims...they work ok if you're just tooling around the 'hood...wouldn't do any off-road stuff.
